i noticed tonight that my 9 month old daughter has big huge spots on the bottoms of her two big toes that look like blisters that have popped and peeled. the skin underneath is all red too. after further inspection, i found that all of her toes look like they've had blisters that have popped and peeled. then i found the same thing on each of her finger tips and one of her palms.

i thought about coxsackie virus, but she hasn't had any fever or any other symptoms at all. she has been mostly happy and playing normally (she is cutting teeth, so a little cranky on occasion, but teething tablets knock that out pretty quickly).

i'd considered eczema, but it doesn't really seem likely.

any other ideas? is it something i should take her to the doctor for? i really hate the thought of going in if i don't have to, with all the flu viruses going around and EVERYONE going in for the slightest little sniffle..... i really don't want either of us to catch something there!!!!!

That's a tough position to be in! I totally understand your fears about taking your lo to the doctor at a time like this, but I think I would still do it, and take extreme precautions to protect yourself and your lo from catching anything in the office.
Sorry I have no advice about what the blisters could be though! Could they possibly be from her crawling or cruising? The only medical condition that I'm aware of that causes that kind of blister-like rash is scabies. But you would most likely have it as well, since it's VERY contagious.
Good luck with everything!

thanks, whiskers! it's nice to know that someone understands my issues with going to the doctor's office!

i've looked up every single thing i could possibly look up that would cause her fingers and toes to look that way, and it seems that the absolutely worst things it might be would be viral anyway, so i didn't think it warranted a trip that could possibly expose us to something worse!

so i decided to give it a day and just watch it closely (with the stipulation that i'd take her in immediately if i saw it was even a little bit worse.... my doctor is really good about walk in appointments, and he's literally 2 minutes away), and it actually started looking progressively better on her hands throughout the day. her toes didn't look worse, but not better either. but i think you're on to something.....

she wasn't crawling as much yesterday, because i had her in the walker a lot of the day (i was working in the kitchen, the walker makes her happy.... you know how it goes!). so it makes sense that her fingers would look better and her toes don't. but she had her slippers on yesterday (she usually walkers barefoot or with just socks on), which i think kept her toes from getting worse.

last night i lotioned her up really good on her fingers and toes, and this morning her fingers and toes are looking a lot better! you almost can't see anything on her fingers, and her toes are about where her fingers were yesterday.

SOOOO, i'm thinking maybe you're right and that it is from crawling and cruising. it's weird, because neither of my other kids experienced it, but maybe because they were born in the winter and crawling and cruising in the hot summer months, where my baby was born in the hot summer and has started crawling and cruising now, when it's still pretty chilly and dries her skin out. interesting.....

so we'll see if it looks worse again today after she's crawling all over the place again....

anyway, thanks for the help!!! :)

That would make sense that her skin is reacting differently to things because of the weather (and dry air). It could also maybe be the way she's gripping with her fingers and toes, I suppose--maybe it causes a lot of friction.
Anyway, glad to hear she's doing better!
