I started in dec. 08 with the 25mg. it worked well for 3 months and one time my BP must of dropped really low because when I felt better enough to take it, it was 90/56, so it had to have been lower then that. Anyway I called my doctor and she said to take half a pill and see how that worked. I have been doing that for 2 months and it is fine. I am getting the same readings as I did with the 25mg, only the not passing out reading. (knock on wood!) How can I have the same readings on a lower dose? I'm not complaining, I just figured with less of a dose it should go up some. Not that I want it to! I know they make a 6.5mg, I was wondering if I could experiment by cutting my 12.5mg in half and seeing if it is the same or close enough. I know I can't get rid of it completely but the smaller the dose would be great. I have never been a heavy intake drinker and taking a water pill, it's just hard staying hydrated. Doctor also has me taking 5 capsules of fish oil so that is 5 more glasses of water then I would of been drinking and it still doesnt feel like eonugh. I figured I'd try the 6mg first before I called her because she would tell me the same thing she did when she told me to cut the pill in half. If my BP went up, to take the other half. Just want some feedback before I get brave enough to try it.

Hi March,

Give it a try. Usually the diuretic effect is completed by the 3rd or 4th day. If you cut it in half and it goes up, you should know in less than a week. BTW, what were your readings without? It seems like a dramatic drop for such a small dose.

I am still taking enalipril 10mg. which i have been on for about 4 years. Then it seemed to "stop Working". my BP was staying at 140/90 at home but of course I have bad white coat syndrome so my doctor put me on the hydrochlorot. 25mg. I lost 4 pounds right away (and quickly put it back on. I swear that water pill makes me hungrier then I used to be) My bp went down to an average of 110/74. The highest it has gotten is 120/80 and the lowest (not counting the 90/56) is about 106/68. Cutting the pill in half is still giving me the same readings.

Hi March,

An ACE and a diuretic are great together, this is likely the reason. I was thinking that you were getting those readings on HCTZ alone.
