Hi friends,

I don't have time to fully elaborate on my story, but the skinny is that I need to have a PICC on top of my minocycline/zithromax regimen. I have some serious concerns however. I am very active, which is one of the few things keeping me sane during this entire ordeal, and from what I understand, I'm going to run into some problems once the catheter is in. My question is for anyone who has had experience with the PICC.

What types of limitations did you experience with the IV? I lift weights regularly and was told that that could be a problem, as is playing drums, and jiu-jitsu. (I've already completely ruled the latter, it would probably get ripped out just from watching. lol.) Is movement restricted? Is it painful when the catheter is irritated or is there risk of damaging it in general? My questions will of course be answered soon with my own experience but I'm doint my best to prepare now. Thanks in advance!

Hi, I had a picc line, and took care of my 2 kids, grociery shopped and whatnot. When it's not in use getting meds, you can put a cover on it (like a sleeve or literally similar to the top half of a sock cut off/tube sock) and if you tape it atop of that- you may be able to pull off your ju jitsu-cant spell it. As for weights, I think you may run into alittle problem- due to the muscles being used- I'm not sure. It is stitched into your arm in 3 little spots- I had mine on constantly hooked to an IV for medical reasons, which you won't have- and got it caught on a chair and ripped out one stitch accidentally, but it was still fine.

My Picc was in the upper part of my arm, about 3" away from my armpit on the inner side.

Once its in, after a day or 2, the achiness is gone, and you resume your normal activities, it's usually covered with a steri strip or similar where it's attached in your arm, and just a little nub is sticking out so you can hook up. If you cover it well, and if needed tape atop of an ace or similar, you can do what you like to with it.

Hope that helps.
