Has anyone had cortisone/lanicade trigger point injections for TMJ? It's being recommended to me and I'm a little leery of having things injected into my face. Are there any side effects that I should be concerned with?

I did them once - I found the shots quite painful - the dr did them on the inside of the jaw and then along the outer jaw line on the side I was "locked" - pretty sure now it was a severe muscle contraction or spasm - I didn't think they helped but that doesn't mean they won't help you. The only possible complication I can think of might be if you are sensitive to lidacaine (sp?) - its what they often use to regulate an irregular heart beat as well but at a much less doseage of course - but I had no repercussions from it or the shots themselves. I think the shots themselves left me even more sore.

I don't think I'm sensitive to it. I'm just scared of more pain or some other horrible side effect. I'm one of those people who get the side effects they warn you about it.

Hi Klowieboyz....I just had trigger point injections yesterday afternoon. I was in a sailing accident two years ago and was hit in the face by the boom of the boat and knocked unconscious. For two years I have been struggling with severe pain in my tmj and entire face and neck from the whiplash. After many different types of treatment (massage, accupuncture, physical therapy, chirpractic, retainers and meds) my doc finally recommended the shots. I was so scared and nervous for them. I had two in my neck (more at the base of the head) and one in my jaw, closer to the middle of the face though. I'm not gonna lie...it hurt. I was very sore last night and felt very stiff, but I woke up this morning feeling better and my kneck and joing is feeling more relaxed..not so stiff. I'm hoping as the days go on and the injection side doesn't hurt any more, i will know the full effects of the shot. My doc swears by them, adn i've heard from many people who have had them and also swear they worked. The problem is, it's not something that is done once, it needs to be done many times. I'm nervous to have to go back, but if it works and leaves me pain free, i'm willing to do it. Hopefully this helps.... marie

Yes it does, thanks. Please come back and give me updates on how you're doing.

Has anyone ever had a trigger point shot that missed the trigger point? Did it cause any problems. My orthodentist has never done this before and I"m a little nervous about her inexperience.
