Hi all,

Just a quick question.

i started taking clonazepam for a sleep/seizure problem and am having a bit of tummy pain, confusion and some agitation.

will these side effects go away over time? no one in the sleep board seems to be able to help me.

Thanks

How long have you been taking Clonazepam and what is your dosage?

Stomach pain, confusion and agitation are all side effects of this med.

It may take awhile for the side effects to disappear, but if they continue to be bothersome, I would contact your doctor.

I take Clonazepam myself (for rapid cycling bipolar disorder). The most annoying side effect I had was clouded thinking, but this gradually improved within a week.

Hi and thanks for responding.

I only took 0.125mg (i have a hypersensitivity to medicaion) and last night was the first time i took it. I noticed i feel a bit "hot" today as well (i'm usually freezing).

I'm wondering if alot of what i'm feeling has to do with lack of sleep. it took forever to go under last night but when i did, i didn't wake up.

Any thoughts?

How long have you gone without sleep? If it's been 2-3 days, your symptoms could very well be due to lack of sleep.

However, since this is the first time you've taken Clonazepam, I'm willing to guess that what you're experiencing are side effects.

If you haven't slept for a single night, I doubt that you'd experience confusion, stomach pain and agitation.

To me, all of those symptoms seem to be indicative of side effects related to Clonazepam.

I have 2 additional questions for you:

1. Do you normally eat breakfast in the morning? If so, did you eat anything today?

2. Do you experience confusion if you miss one night of sleep?

Hi again,

i usually don't eat in the morning and i'm not usually confused if i don't sleep. i'm actually in pain and feel very sick and nauseated.

Is clonazepam related to SSRIs? It seems i'm having the same reaction (though minor) as i did with those drugs. Kind of a flushed feeling, pins and needles, etc. Or is this normal at first?

Clonazepam isn't an SSRI. It's a benzodiazepine, but can have similar side effects to SSRIs.

If you feel as sick as you've described, I would call your doctor right away. Perhaps he or she can put you on a different med such as an anti-convulsant like Depakote or Lamictal.

Sorry about the confusion.

Let me retype that.

if i don't sleep, thats when i get very sick. (painfully sick).

SSRIs made my skin crawl and i had "pins and needles" in my arms and legs. i have a slight sensation of that now with Clonazepam. I'm so tired of trying to find a drug that i can actually tolerate! (asprin makes me sick :P)

thanks again for your timely replies! I called my doc and i'll be lucky to talk to him next week even though i'm a bit scared right now. Yea healthcare!

Thanks for the clarification!

I would suggest that you continue taking your dose of Clonazepam as prescribed since stopping meds cold turkey can result in further problems.

By the way, Lamictal has a very low side effect profile, so if you ask your doctor about trying a different med, that's one you may want to consider.

If you have any additional questions before your appointment next week, let me know.

Good luck!

The problem with Lamictal is that it's activating and can actually make you not sleep even more....that's the problem I've had with it.

Not everyone finds Lamictal to be activating.

In fact, I know several people who take Lamictal and they report feeling sleepy which is a side effect of this med.

The only problem is that if you're taking a med for sleep *and* seizures, you're going to need one that treats both or you'll need to take an anti-convulsant and a separate sleep med.

Having said that, only your doctor can suggest what is best given your medical history.

I agree that you doc is the only one who can decide. one of the reasonce my pdoc put me on lamictal as my mood stabilizer is because of my seizure disorder. But like you i know many people who finds that lamictal interferes in their sleep, which is why i put my 2 cents in.

The only way the original poster will know for sure is by trying it.

Other alternatives for sleep meds include Ambien, Klonopin, Trazodone, Lunesta, Sonata, Remeron and Neurontin.

awesome! lots of stuff to look into! thanks again.

i'm wondering if i'm having so many issues as i already have an underlying peripheral neuropathy. More questions to ask my doc when i finally get to see him :P. i'll keep you posted.

I have never heard of having stomach pain from Klonipin however, you need to speak to your doctor about it. Confusion may be that your taking too much at one time and it is making you this way. However, speak with your doctor about lowering it because I don't want you to have a seizure.

I didn't catch this earlier, but you said that you're taking 0.125mg. Do you mean 1.25mg?

The reason I ask is because Clonazepam comes in .5mg, 1mg, 2mg, 3mg and 4mg.

As for your confusion, that is a side effect of Clonazepam. I had some dulled/clouded thinking during the first 2-3 days I took it, but this gradually disappeared.

If you do an Internet search for "Clonazepam + side effects" you will see that confusion and stomach pain are listed.

Hi again,

I'm literally taking 0.125mgs! I'm taking the lowest available dosage and cutting it into quarters. My doc remommended this due to chemical hypersensitivity. (I took a tylonol 3 once and almost ended up in the psych-ward).

I took one again and so far so good! I'm still a bit groggy and queezy but i'm not tingly anymore. AND i slept rather well last night! I'm wondering if some of the side effects could be psychosomatic due to my fear of taking medication. i'm going to wait until tonight to up the dosage a bit.

i really appreciate having you guys here! makes this whole ordeal alot easier, mentally, for me to handle.

Thanks! :)

I'm glad you slept well last night! Having said that, I would suggest waiting one more night before raising your dosage so your body can become used to the Clonazepam. If you're able to sleep well again tonight, I would either keep it at the .125mg dose or let your doctor know that you plan to raise it to the next lowest dose. Good luck!

I agree, dreams is awesome. :) AND WOW. I almost wish I had hypersensitivity. It would help me out a whole lot more. I am currently taking valium, I just took 2 mgs to help with my anxiety. It really doesn't do anything. Same with Klonopin, Xanax, so forth. It really sucks:dizzy:

Good news! I'm able to sleep slightly better! I'm still groggy in the morning from the side effects but that's starting to come down too.
Also, i've actually been having pleasant dreams!! I almost always have nightmares.

My sleep doc said that when i'm awake, i'm in charge, confident, happy, smart, etc. however, when i'm sleeping, i have the brain of some one who is clinically depressed. there is also some childhood trauma in there...and apparently thats where the nightmares come from. when i'm awake, i refuse to admit that anything is wrong no matter what is happening (the world could be coming to an end and i'd say i'm fine). he said i'm a "chronic denier" and its that stress and anxiety that surfaces when i sleep.

I thought he was a nutjob but i'm starting to think he's right...

Wonderful! I'm so happy for you!

I can relate to having nightmares. I have PTSD and whenever I'm triggered during the day, I have vivid, frightening dreams.

However, ever since my psychiatrist added Clonazepam to help control my rapid cycling, my anxiety level due to PTSD has decreased as well as my nightmares.

In any case, I'm glad things have improved for you!

UPDATE;

I decided after taking clonazepam for a week before bed to see what would happen if i didn't take one. Nightmares, tremors, etc. Bad idea!

I finally got in to see my doctor today and he opted to put me on valium (i have taken it in the past with great success as a vestibular suppressant).

Apparently (he's a new doctor) he is ALSO hypersensitive to medications! We had a super long talk about how much it sucks to have bad reactions to seemly normal medications so i'm now on 1-5mg of valium as i see fit.

I'm actually really excited to try it out tonight to see if it will actually work while i'm sleeping!

I was so happy i just had to tell some one!!

Aw good. I always have unpleasant dreams/nightmares. Random ones too that make no sense. Unfortunately I'm never "'awake, incharge, confident, nor happy" And I'm seriously starting to doubt my IQ.

I am going to chide you a bit for stopping a benzo like that (shakes finger). Only kidding - but that can be dangerous, too, as you doubtless know. That withdrawal is awful, isn't it?

Glad to here to hear about the Valium trial, esp. if works for your physical problem, too. Does the Valium help you calm down as the Klonopin did?

Were you getting a bad reaction to the Klonopin? Sleep well!

Hi again!

I actually didn't sleep well AT ALL with valium!! I was knocked out for 3 hours then wide awake! Not fun.

My doc told me to wait a day or two then switch back to clonazepam. (i was only on it for a week on a super low dose of 0.125mg due to a sensitivity thing).

it seems to work the best for keeping me asleep and stopping me from having tremors but the nausea is pretty annoying. it also leaves me quite groggy all day but i have to say i'm not nearly as scatter-brained as before! i can think with clarity just a bit slower than before. i also notice that i feel hungry a lot...?

I actually DID have some withdrawl during the 2 day wait between this and valium! even on such a low dose! i couldn't believe it! i was twitching alot and had a monster of a headache! powerful stuff!
