I would suggest that you go to the PM doctor appointment with her if possible and ask the same question. Can surgery really correct her problem? She could always see another doctor like an orthopedist for a second opinion. The best thing to do would be to have her go see her primary care physician and tell him/her what the PM doc is suggesting. She does not have to do anything that she is not comfortable with and the pain pump is "the last resort" as we chronic pain patients like to put it.

If she is only on morphine pills then that is really not that strong or that much narcotic medication. There are many other medications and even patches that can be worn that are much stronger and could possibly control her pain better. There are also anti-seizure meds (ie. Lyrica, Neurontin) or anti-depressants (ie. Cymbalta) that can be used which have been shown to effectively treat some types of pain and are non-narcotic.

If the PM doc is telling her that because the morphine pills are not working that she needs a pain pump then that is ludacris. There is no reason that this should happen when other medications can and should be tried before going to the "last resort". I hope that helps.

I would agree. The morphine pump should be one of the last options. Morphine from a pump is like morphine IV in a hospital.

The reason oral morphine doesn't work that well in some people is because it has low bioavailability. Think of bioavailability as "efficiency" and like miles per gallon (MPG) in a car. Well, oral morphine has poor MPG. You have to take a lot more of it in order to get the same effects as other meds.

As Brian said, there are many other meds out there to try before going to a surgical implanted pump. If your aunt isn't all that active, then the patch may be a good bet...It works well.

Best of luck to her,

Regards,

Ex
