I have been so constipated for so long now. I have literally almost no urge to go at any time. I take everything under the sun to help this. I have been starting to have pains on my right side under my ribs. I also have had it like radiate to my back and or my back feels like it is out. Enemas don't do much but give me gas. It is as if the poo is the right consistency but there is nothing to make it move. How long can one go without "going?" What are symptoms of something serious enough to go to the er? My dr. has me taking this and that and none of it works. Anyone?

If the doctor you are working with is your primary care physician, it might be time to get a referral to a gastroenterologist.

I have a GI dr. I think it is more serious than he does as I think he deals with people who need parts removed, etc. and constipation isn't that high on his list. (Just coming to grips with this realization.) So, this weekend, I may just have to go to the hospital.

I had that same feeling that I wasn't very high on my GI's list of priorities. So off I went to find another. I have been struggling for 5 months. New GI gave me a prescription on my first visit.. I was back to my old self by morning!

How long has it been? And just to get some idea, what have you tried? Does anything seem to help at all?

Name it, and I have tried it. I even spent money I don't have in hopes that vsl3 would help. I have a rectocele which is an after affect of my recent hysterectomy, so it is also in the way of me having a complete evacuation. Basically, I have the smallest, most pathetic movements maybe 2-3 times a week, but feel 8 months pregnant with the stuff that hasn't moved. I look bloated as well in the abdomen. I fear my intestines may burst. Does this happen and if so, what would be an initial symptom?
