It seems since I was 17 I've had problems with low iron levels. I really don't have heavy periods. I was bleeding at a time when I went to have a bowl movement and hardly went at all..to make a long story short had a colonoscopy in 8/07 and I was FINE. Now on Miralax and Fibercon so it's under control. Moving on, I've donated blood many times on and off and would be fine, then the levels would get low again. . A nurse called me earlier to read me my blood work labs (I had me yearly physical last Wed and always ask for a CBC) and that's when she told me about the iron levels and a Ferritin count of 3! I explained to her I no longer do blood drives, I eat as much iron fortified foods as possible..if anything I would think too much. I do not understand

Daises28--Welcome to the boards!

I don't know how old you are but a visit to your GI doc may be in order. They can check a few things of the list as a cause for a low ferritin. Its good that you have had a colonoscopy. Have you donated blood in the last year, when was your last time? If you don't fill up the stores they can continue to fall due to periods, over time. FLFG :)

I think I need to see a Hematologist. My doctor mailed me the tests results, she said I'm not anemic but my iron stores are low, told me to take a multi vit with iron in it. I have iron supplements from like 2 years ago, they have not expired, not till 2011. There's a 65mg in them from Rite Aid. Dark green coating.

Have you absorbed iron supplements in the past? FLFG :)

Yes they worked. My doc told me I'm not anemic but my iron stores are low and to take a multi vitamin with iron in it, is taking an iron supplement the samething?

An iron supplement is not the same as a multi. An iron supplement is mostly iron (like your 65mgs), occasionally with other things for absorption i.e, vit-c, IF, B-12 things like that. If you have no iron stores such as you, I am not so sure that a multi vitamin is enough to fill your stores. My doctor's would say otherwise. It would take forever on that dose...... It can take up to a year for some anyway. I think you should get a second opinion on that. Or consult your current doctor about it after you do some research on your own. You still need to find a cause (through testing) for your low ferritin stores. FLFG :)
