I have been on the highest doses of vasotec and atenolol and a diuretic and was switched to diovan160/25 with 100 mg atenolol. None of theses makes one difference. My bp is sometimes 180/120 with medication! But the same without! Although I had a nurse use the "big" cuff once and my bp was almost normal!!! Anyone have a problem with bp meds NOT working and then what?

well I did for about 3 months. my BP was 191/110 and it just was stubborn! A diuretic worked for me finally. They obviously need to change up your meds somehow.

We may try a combo of Vasotec with diovan/diuretic

Do you need the big cuff? Measure your arms. You want to take your b/p in the arm which has a consistently higher b/p.

Yes, I'm one of those who had high b/p while on a ton of b/p meds. This situation naturally raises alarm bells which contribute to the higher b/p. Once I added HCTZ & dropped clonidine (which I believe was actually raising my b/p), my b/p got under control (which is still iffy depending on what is going on.) Be sure & check out the dash diet for HBP & perhaps have a sleep study to see if you have sleep apnea. Keep telling yourself that this will end in the near future. Fam

This is an interesting question. Your high blood pressure CAN be controlled, given the RIGHT antihypertensive medication in the right doses.

They say that the most common cause of resistant hypertension is non-compliance. Some people take diuretics, but are unwilling to restrict their sodium intake. So, what it the whole point of taking diuretics:dizzy: ?
Others take their antihypertensive medication only sporadically (when they feel like it). Some don't like the side-effects. Sometimes suboptimal therapy is to blame, which could be your problem.

My hypertension was very resistant to drug therapy, perhaps because of the kidney damage. It took a long time to gain good blood pressure control. If I could do it, so can you. :)

When people are referred to hypertension clinics with "resistant" hypertension, the first (and often only) change that is usually made includes a diuretic. If a diuretic is not already a part of the existing therapy, it is added; if the hypertensive individual has been taking a diuretic, the dose is increased. Another option is to use a diuretic with a different site of action. Sometimes, two different types of diuretics are co-administered in smaller doses. Taking these simple measures usually results in a blood pressure reduction in most individuals. :) I hope your doctor finds a way to reduce your blood pressure soon. You should not have to live with an uncontrolled hypertension.

Jerome77;

I recently realized (upon being unable to swallow my medication for a week or so) that my blood pressure stayed the same pretty much regardless of medication or not.

I also had other symptoms on medication, like shortness of breath, syncope and so on.. come to find out (this is theory) that my pressure would drop so low my heart couldnt pump enough to my brain..and BAM out I would go.

I also believe that those horrible undersized cuffs cause enough pain to make your pressure spike somewhat.. but thats my opinion.

You may need a tweaking of medication, or maybe a further evaluation it might be deeper than just high bp.
