Daughter, age 19 developed a DVT in upper thigh/abdomen in October. (7 months ago) She had been taking YAZ birth control. Hospitalized one week - lovonox injections for two weeks and then a coumadin regiman with a goal of between 2.0 - 3.0 INR.
Blood studies indicated that she has lupus anticoagulant disorder. (Two positives)
Tests indicate that the INR tends to stay around 1.0 - 1.5. It has only been above 2.0 a few times since October. She has been taking 15 mg. daily for at least 3 weeks. Todays INR was 1.6. Last weeks was 1..0.
Tried switching from generic to coumadin - no change.
At our visit with the hematologist today, he suggested that the YAZ was most likely the cause of the blood clot and that the coumadin does not appear to be making a difference. He recommended stopping the coumadin and seeing what happens when she's not taking it. He said that it is better for her to run at a 1.0 without the coumadin than it is to run at that with the coumadin.
