First I am about 5 months post op from my 2nd pttd surgery. I am have a very very horrible time with the screw this time around and a much longer recovery than the first one. The screw in the back of my heel even rubbing against my sneaker hurts. I am 26 days away from its removal but just in constant pain that the motrin is far from helping. This is very uncomfortable. Has any one else had this issue what did you do? And also a weird question can the screw work itself loose and come through the skin?

I am 4.5 weeks from my second pttd surgery and this is one of my biggest fears! I feel for you. I know I have read posts here from people who have had their hardware removed so I hope you get some advice soon! Good luck.

Kristi,

actually, it can back out. Hopefully this won't happen to you before you can get it removed. I had to wear backless shoes until I got mine out at 6 months. In fact, I still prefer backless shoes.

How terrible! I hope the pain won't be too much for you over the next few weeks - I agree with Emmie, maybe backless shoes until you get the screw out. I've read on here about people having to have their screws taken out and it seemed pretty straight forward, so I hope that's what it will be for you as well.

Hi,
I asked my surgeon about the screws and he told me that once the bone has healed completely they can be removed if they start to bother you. He said it is really common for them to cause issues. My husband had is ankle fused 2 years ago and we can now feel and see the screws. My doc said you will be laid up for 2 weeks once they are removed and then there shouldn't be any problems. Mine haven't bothered me yet and hope they don't. Try the open back shoe like croc's or something similiar.

I was on crutches for two days and then walking just fine. I had the stitches out at either a week or ten days....can't remember exactly. But I only had one large screw in the back of my heel.
