The only thing that I know of from personal experience is thyroid disorders. When I was just 15 I was diagnosed with an exothalmic goiter with grave's disease. At 17 most of my thyroid was removed and it was after becomming hypothyroid that my hair changed from being thick but soft to being thin from excessive fall out and it became extremely dry and course. Another culprit may be a vitamin and/or mineral deficency. If you've noticed a drastic change in your hair's texture and thickness it would be wise to chech with your Dr.

It might also be a hormone change in your body. Are you pre or post menopausal? Stress can also affect your hair.
Go to your doc and request a blood workup, putting special emphasis on thyroid and also hormone levels.

Some medications can change the texture of your hair or make it fall out. I'm not sure about the knotting, though.
