Can someone tell me what causes stools to float in the toilet stool? Is it anything serious? I haven't seen that before and just thought I would ask. Thanks!

Sponsor Linda_in_NJ 05-24-2009, 11:29 AM It could be something serious. Your stool floats due to fatty contents. Have blood work done for your liver, bile ducts and gall bladder. If the stools are light in color, it could be your liver. Any pain? It could be just an infection also but do see a doctor if it continues. Some people with IBS have this sometimes.

Good Luck, Linda If you mean pain in releasing the stool..no. I do have IBS. I had blood work about a year ago or less and everything was fine but I was just wondering. Some of the stool floats and some doesn't. That was what didn't make sense to me. when you say light in color, are you talking like a white color or yellow or light brown? When you say fatty content, does that mean eating too much high fat foods? Katielyn 05-24-2009, 01:00 PM Also, is it true according to what you eat can cause stool to be different colors?
auntjudyg 05-24-2009, 07:59 PM It's nothing serious . . . its a combination of factors.
vh90453 05-25-2009, 07:01 AM Fatty stools do not float. Stools float when they have more air/gas in them. This is nothing to worry about.
Linda_in_NJ 05-25-2009, 09:42 AM If you have IBS that's probably the cause. And you did have blood work recently so everything should be fine. If the stools are gray colored is what I meant for light colored stools and some food does show up in your stools, hence the color. I would not worry about it. As long as there is no stomach pain, you will be fine. If the IBS is really bothering you, try taking a probotic to equalize the bacteria in your intestines. Stay well. Linda
