I had my hair colored with a demi to match my natural color and cover some grey hairs, then had highlights. The highlights are just too bright/yellow for me. They don't look natural at all. I made another appt. to fix it. What can I expect them to do to make the highlights more natural looking?

hello!
is your hair brown? light or dark brown? tell them to simply use a non-permanent toner on your hair to blend the highlights into your hair so your hightlights will be suttle, not Zebra-like or Scunk Stripes. they need to use a lighter brown than your natural haircolor so you can still see the hightlights though. the highlights will get lighter more you wash your hair. if they look at you puzzled and tell you they've never heard of that, RUN FOR YOUR LIFE OUT THE SALON, then go somewhere where they know what they're doing. i've had way too many nightmares with my hair the past 2 years, and this exact dilema you are in now, so i've decided to just leave mine alone for awhile, but try that, & let me know if you have further questions. good luck!;)

Thank you for the advice. My hair is normally dark brown. I usually get really thin highlights every second or third time I get the demi color but this time she suggested to go a little thicker with them. But I think they are too thick and I also think they were left in way too long. A question about the toner...Will it fade after a while, only to reveal the bright highlights again?

oh, mine is dark brown too. when you get the semi-perm toner on your hair, dont wash for 3 to 4 days if you want to lock color in for longer. but everytime you wash your hair will fade slightly. first time & perhaps first few times you wash after color, you'll see brown washing out, but after that, it's a slow, gradual fading and highlights will become more noticeable as days/weeks pass, it's not too noticable if the stylist uses good products. i would ask the brand of product they use before getting it done. also, use a good color-treated shampoo like any of the Purology line.

Okay, so eventually it will bring me back to square one? Is there anything I can do to make it so the yellow color will not ever show back through? Aside from growing it out which I'm going to do! Maybe low-lights? Or will that make it worse? It was a partial highlight, like 6 or 7 foils, not the whole head if that makes a difference. Thank you for your help!

oh, 6 or 7 foils is nothing! that's good then. i just cant believe she let you walk out of her salon with yellow stripes. well, i had full highlights all over & underneath my dark brown, probably about 50 or more foils. that was about 2 & 1/2 months ago, and the highlights are still not that noticeable, so no, your hightlights should not go back to square one-yellow-if you put an all over dark brown back on your hair that should cover them up pretty well, and for a long while. i wouldnt mess with low lights right now.

Wow, 50! I guess I should feel lucky! I keep going back and forth and considered cancelling the appointment but I will go and see what she can do. One minute I think it looks okay (when I brush it, it looks blended but it usually separates and looks stripy again), the next it looks yellow toned, the next it looks brassy, especially if I am in natural light. I think I'm inspecting it way too much. My appt. is tomorrow morning so I'll let you know how it goes.

I'm back. I got another demi base color put in over the highlights. It looks a lot better, and the highlights look more like a light brown now. Hopefully the other color will not show through for a long time. I will go back again in 4 or 5 weeks and get the demi applied again. Now if only I can get this bad haircut fixed.

oh good! i'm glad it turned out ok for you. but what is up with the haricut? how is it cut? i've had nightmare with the cut on mine too, so totally feel your pain...what she do to it? whack it all off? take the razor to it?

It's a bob, with the hair a little longer in the front than in back. I decided to grow it out because it's a pain to style and I have to flat iron it every day or it looks like a frizzy mess. I also have one side in the back that likes to flip up, and the other side doesn't. I asked just to trim the ends. She tried to "fix" the flip and now I look like I have a different hairstyle on each side because it looks really choppy on the flippy side and smooth on the other side. It only made it worse and now it flips up more than ever. It takes even longer to style and flat iron. Ugh. I'm just going to leave it alone. I'm afraid to get even get a trim now because I don't want to make it even worse. What happened with your cut?

oh that's horrible.maybe try some hair growth natural supplements. but a year and a half ago my hairdresser at the time who i'd been going to for years whacked off all my long thick hair, took the razor to it, said she was "texturizing it", and i've looked horrible ever since. year after that i tried someone else, she whacked it off some more and thinned it with the razor after i told her to not use the razor, she said she was just going to barely use it. yea right. still trying to grow it out & get it to thicken back up. then another girl turned my hair black. it's been really hard to get it back to a brown. still hate the color. too dark. anyway, it's a much longer story than that, but i'd be typing a novel on here. that's the jist.
