Hi everyone,
I've been taking 180mg of Fexofenadine (Allegra generic) for year round allergies. I take it once/day in the morning.
Lately I've been experiencing symptoms in the afternoon and evening as well. I have a great deal of congestion in addition to sneezing.
I called my GP to ask if I can take another 1-2 doses/day and was told by her nurse that it is strictly a med that is only prescribed once/day.
My GP is out of the office for the weekend, so she recommended that I do the best I can until Monday when I can ask about being put on a different allergy med.
Do you have any suggestions for what I can take OTC to give me some relief until then? I'm miserable right now and need to do something so that I'm able to breathe and rest comfortably.

I can't see to read labels. Was there a particular kind of Benadryl that you took?
Did it have a special formulation?

Try Zyrtec.
I used to take Zyrtec 2 years ago when it was prescription only and it worked quite well for me.
I think I'll take your advice and give it a try. Thanks.

Are you taking a decongestant? If not and you don't have high blood pressure, you might try some Pseudophedrine (Sudafed) temporarily.
Is Allegra the only allergy med you are taking? I take other allergy meds as well that help with the allergy symptoms in other ways. For me Flonase, Astelin and Singulair help. Adding a nasal spray might be a next step.
Good luck at your docs.

No, I am not taking a decongestant.
As for your second question -- yes -- Allegra is the only allergy med I'm on.
I'll definitely ask my GP if she can prescribe one of the nasal sprays you mentioned in addition to a different allergy med. I've also thought about switching to Singulair, so I will run that idea past her as well.
Thanks again.
In the meantime, I plan to call my pharmacist first thing tomorrow and ask about taking Zyrtec temporarily since it is my understanding that some allergy meds can negatively interfere with anti-depressants. I take 2 anti-depressants (Prozac and Trazodone), so I'd have to make sure the former doesn't cause any problems.

Hi everyone,
Thanks to all of you for your suggestions.
I bought some Claritin D and Vicks from the drugstore yesterday and am feeling much better.
In the meantime, I plan to ask my GP tomorrow about taking a different allergy med, adding a nasal spray as well as an inhaler to help my coughing.
