Hi! I am new to the message board. My name is Jennifer and I am here looking for some information. My Mom who is 66 years old was diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease a year ago. The only symptom she has right now is leg stiffness and trouble with balance. She has excellent strength though. She was put on Sinemet three times daily and it seemed to help at first. Over time it's effectiveness has worn off a bit. Her doctor recommended and perscribed a medicine called Mirapex. She started with .0125mg - 3x's a day. It didn't respond so he increased the dosage to .25mg - 3x's a day. It has seemed to help with her stiffness some what.

Now, here is my concern. Since being on the Mirapex (2 months now) my Mom has become somewhat forgetful. I know that memory loss and dementia has been linked to Parkinson's Disease...but this seems to have started suddenly. She gets the days of the week confused mostly. I did some research on the drug Mirapex and it lists amnesia as one possible side effects. I plan on discussing this with my Mom this weekend and having her talk to her doctor on Monday. But I was wondering....has anyone else experienced memory lapse or amnesia while taking Mirapex?

Any information on this would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you in advance.
-Jennifer

You might want to try the similar Requip or ask the doctor to go back to Sinemet. I was on Requip for two years and I'm off for the moment and am on Sinemet and I feel a lot more alert (I work full time). But the pharmacology of Requip/Mirapex has its advantages and I may wind up going back on it after a July appointment.

Jennifer I hope they can adjust her medication so she does not have to suffer side effect, and can resume her medication so everything will be normal again.. Please post back let us know how she's doing after she sees her physician again. Take care!
