View Full Version : How long before I get a period?

Hope you can help me. My doctor put me on a course of 200mg Prometrium to bring on a period. I am 62 years old and am very post menopausal.

I had a vaginal ultrasound done and it showed a thickened uterine lining and a polyp. The endometrial biopsy came back fine, but she's telling me I need to shed the lining in the hopes of shedding the polyp with it.

I finished my last Prometrium 5 days ago. No period yet. I do have some slight cramping and back pain. So when do you think I may get this period? I hope I do and I hope it works because I'd rather not go thru a D+C for a benign polyp.

I have never heard of Prometrium causing you to shed a polyp. I thought those had to be removed. Do you know how thick your uterine lining was?

Sorry - I don't know how thick the lining is. Interesting --- my internist also told me she thinks this progesterone therapy that will cause a period COULD cause the polyp to shed, too.

I'm starting to wonder if both the GYN and the INTERN are out of touch with the right protocol.

Anyway --- assuming we give them the benefit of the doubt, how long after my last Promterium should I expect a period?

The Prometrium would be the first thing to try for the thickened lining, I have just never heard of it causing the polyp to come out too.

I think you are supposed to start within 2 weeks, but I have heard of it not working at all with some women. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it works for you.

I'm only 35 but I've had these polyps removed 4 times in the last 3 years. They keep growing back. I can tell you from PERSONAL EXPERIENCE that those things will NOT disloge themselves, they need to be surgically removed through a hysteroscopy and then subsequent D&C to thin out the uterus again.

I've had this done so many times I know all about it. What do you need to know?

Don't just get a blind D&C without hysteroscopy because they will not get the polyp. The whole point of why the surgeon (in my case it was my gyne) uses the hysteroscope is to be able to see the polyp and remove it correctly. If you just get an ordinary D&C, the procedure will just brush over the polyp and it will not remove it completely. I know this for a fact, and I really hope your doc won't insist on doing a blind D&C.

What else do you need to know? I can tell you everything, I'm a total expert on this whole thing by now.

Thanks for the valuable feedback. What kind of anesthesia do they use for the surgery? Is it like a twilight sleep or are you completely out? I have sleep apnea and I always worry about the management of my airway if I need any surgery.

Thanks for the support. This is interesting because my OB/GYN and my internist are in agreement that shedding the lining COULD also shed the polyp. I guess I need to try this a step at a time and hope for the best.

I had twilight done the first 2 times, general the third and twilight the fourth. The reason for general the third time was because I had an overzealous anesthesiologist who said he was worried about me aspirating because I have GERD. I hate getting general because it really affects me strongly, so I inisisted on twilight the fourth time and it was fine.

One of the questions the anesthesiologists have always asked me about was sleep apnea. They always ask that question before they decide what type of anesthesia to use. They also check your airway ahead of time and have a classification system to decide whether you could accommodate an intubation. I wouldn't worry about it, just tell them it's a serious concern of yours and the anesthesia team will take care of it.

I don't know what your doc and gyne are smoking if they think shedding the lining will make the polyp go away on its own. The very nature of a polyp makes that impossible! It's attached to the uterine wall by a stalk that needs to be clipped in order to remove it. That stalk will never dislodge on its own. I wouldn't count on that and I'm surprised that both of your docs are so clueless that they would think it could be done. You definitely need to get new medical care because these 2 are like dumb and dumber.

Thanks again. You're right. I did some research about this on the web and from the looks of these polyps and their stalks, there's no way to get rid of them without surgery. I'm getting tired waiting for this Prometrium to bring on this period. Especially if I have to have surgery anyway they could have just scraped the lining and cut the polyp at the same time without this uncomfortable drug therapy.

Oh well -- I'll try to stay positive. Things could be a lot worse.
