If it looks like bruising, it more than likely is. If you are a runner or wore shoes that were tight against the toes and nail, they can develop a hematoma and blood will collect in the space between the nail bed and the nail plate. This will have to grow out with the nail plate as new cells are developed in the matrix and push the damaged portion toward and off the free edge.
