Hello I am the mom of a awesome 8 yr old boy. He has been diagnosed with pdd-nos and borderline bipoplar since he was about 6 yrs old. Until recently I have not had him on meds and not because I was in denial but because I have seen what they do to people first hand. I guess now I have to try to trust in these meds but they are so confusing. And if I ask the doctor question they just get upset at me and tell me their the doctors. The more research I do the more scared I get. I guess I really just want to know what you all think of the drugs they are using now? He is currently on prozac and strattra which seems to help a little but he becoming more violent so I need something else. Please your oppinoin would help alot so please give it.

Many years ago my son's teachers were insisting he had ADD, and as a mom I had to DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT. He must have been 9-10 years old. I didn't think he had it, nor did his psychologist, nor his allergy doctor. But the psychologist suggested a plan. Give him Ritalin for a few weeks, don't tell the teachers. If I don't see a difference, or see a bad difference, stop the meds. So I did that. After about a month, I asked the teachers if they had noticed a difference. NO, and MOM NEEDED TO DO SOMETHING ABOUT THAT ADD. I informed them he had been taking Ritalin for a month, and since that didn't seem to be the problem, he would be coming off them immediately. Stopped them in their tracks. That was years before we discovered he had Aspergers. I'm the one with ADHD, but it is mostly caused by a wheat allergy.

What I'm saying is, if you decide to try the meds, you can stop them just as quickly. Moms are with the kids, we see the differences. Doctors want us to just do what they say, no questions asked. When I encounter a doctor like that, I find another doctor. Also, sometimes, those of us with Aspergers need a lower dosage (of all meds) than normal people, even 1/2 or less. Even my allergy doctor has learned to give me tiny doses. A friend with some Aspergers traits was given an antidepressant, and it didn't help. They halved the dose, and he feels much better.

hi - if your son has bipolar issues (as mine does; now 21) he absolutely should not be on prozac!! i'll save you the aggravation we went thru with it; it can kick in a mania and make our kids aggressive. my son is on zyprexa and depakote; we did many trials with other meds but these are perfect for the mood swing and calming issues. mention them to his dr. prozac is an ssri; good for depression but not for bipolar.
