I am nearly 100% sure I have balanitis. (Penis infection caused by poor hygiene.) I've had smegma build up under the foreskin and have cleaned that away. But occasional itching and some occasional pain remains. Went to see Doctor last week but was told there is nothing wrong. Bit embarrased and don't really want to have to go back. Think it is getting better but need advice on getting rid of red irritation on head of penis. Have been washing regularly but don't know if that is enough. Is there a cream or something I can use to reduce the irritation on the head? Please help. Any information would be appreciated. Thanks.

I had this also, and I ended up having circumcision done. I was 42 at the time, but it did take care of the problem. I know there are arguments pro and con on circumcison, but I would talk with my Doctor to see what else maybe done. I'm not sorry I had the circumcision, yes it was a little painful during healing. Especially the night erections that occur with us men. Just a thought!

Yes, there is a cream that can help with this. I'm not sure of its name, but Nurse_Oz talks about it all the time. Hey nurse.....are you out there? Hang tight (no pun intended!) Someone will be along to help you get the right stuff going!

I would use neosporin cream if it's a bacterial thing causing the redness. But I'll tell you one thing that works wonders is a the over-counter vaginal yeast infection cream. I helps reduce itching and redness if the cause is yeast. Good Luck
To Asher:
It's rare that we hear from people who have been circumcised when they are older. I'm assuming you have had sexual experience before and after the circumcision. Would you care to give us some insight into the differences? If not, that is fine too.

Thanks for the suggestions. I live in the UK so I don't think I can get neosporin here. Will try your other suggestion though. Would like to try an anti-bacterial cream as well though if anyone can suggest a good one that is available in the UK. Thanks again.

Asher here.....Yes you are right circumcision at that age is a little out of the ordinary I think. It was my Drs. suggestion so I went with it.
Yes I had sexual experince before and after my circumcision. At the time I had been married 14 years, and with two daughters. Sex was great before, and with no real problems. My foreskin always retarced with no troble in fact when I was erect, it would do it on it's own. I could retract it for cleaning, as well as masturbation.
But with the on set of Balantis more care was being required in the area of cleaning. That was one of the reasons for the circumcison then too, there was the smell, and the general itching, that goes along with it. But that is a little off track.
Now as to sex afterwards, well... to be honest, I can't really see much difference. I still have good strong sensations in the head, and shaft of my Penis. Also my wife is still happy with my performance. So I think for me all is well. I can understand why some would be slow to make this move. I have heard of cases where all sensations are lost, or problems occur with getting/keeping an erection after circumcision.
But again, I'm not sorry I had this done, and I guess if it ever come to it, I would again. Of course ever case is different. Each person has to do what is best for him.
Thanks for asking, glad to share. Also if there is anymore questions, I'm happy to try to answer them.
One other note, I did have a Penile Implant, about four years after my circumision.

Mr Mustard:
Neosporin cream is a standard over-the-counter antibacterial cream. It is used for general cuts, scrapes etc.. You should be able to ask a pharmacist what is available without a prescription.
To Asher:
Thank you very much for your insight. I'm glad things worked out well for you.

I have a similar problem it started in 1994, i had a red blotch on the head of my penis which sort of scabbed over,, it was never painful but i was worried so i went to the local genito urinary clinic and had myself checked out, i had chlamidia and non specific urethritis which was cleared with anti-biotics but the scab remained baffling the docs!!! then after a year it just disapeared overnight....
then at xmas i noticed a hard lump under my flange(for the want of a better word) and squeezed it and a semi hard cheesy substance came out and ever since then the red blotch has reappeared. ive tried antibacterial soaps, cold sore creams , antiseptic creams but all to no availl
