If cancer runs heavy on my fathers side , can this increase my chances of cervical cancer? I have been diagnosed a while back and the doctor is now looking at another colposcopy.

Not directly, but researchers are looking at families to see if/why some women are more prone to getting cervical cancer (or other types of cancers for that matter).

Cervical cancer is caused (99% of th time) by HPV. So a woman must be exposed to HPV to end up with cervical cancer. But I suspect you know this. As an aside, you know HPV can cause other cancers, too, right?

I'm glad your doctor is doing a follow up. How long as it been since your last colpo? Do you have an appointment for this one yet? Do you know what type of dysplasia you were diagnosed with? glandular or squamous?

I agree with Pickle Eyes, there has been no genetic link to cervical cancer. The main cause of cervical dysplasia is persistent infection of a high risk HPV type. The only other advice I would give you would be to not smoke. If you smoke, stop. If you don't, never start. It is another co-factor in the development of cervical cancer (lung and bladder cancer too).
