Went to the ER a few days ago and found out that the pain I've been having for years is my gallbladder.... and am now facing having it removed.
Had a tonsillectomy in 2004 and had a horrible reaction to the anesthesia, likely the morphine, had sever respiratory depression post op.
So the thought of facing another surgery is killing me emotionally.
How bad is the gall bladder surgery???? I mean, dangerous wise? I don't care much about the pain, just worried about dying from complications .....
I cant function, cant eat, cant sleep , cry constantly......I am SOO scared.
I feel like this is a nightmare..

Laparoscopy gallbladder removal is pretty safe. I was in and out and recovering very fast.
If you don't like Morphine, ask for Fentanyl. A lot of people react better to it.

I wouldn't worry - mine was done 8 months ago. I was very scared like you because I hate surgery.
Please, please don't stress yourself out and be scared. It last only 20 minutes. They gave me a sedative to calm me down then I don't remember a thing until I woke up in the recovery room. I stayed in the recovery room for 2 hours. They just check your heart rate and blood pressure. You are served crackers and ginger ale. After that I went home. I rested for a couple of days and then I walked around. No problem.
It is not a nightmare, please don't worry. Just schedule it quick and it will be over quick. You will not die from complications. This is one of the most routine surgeries they have and your percentages are so low it is ridiculous.

I can only second what the others have said. I jogged 2 miles a week after having mine out. That was 4 years ago and all is still well. It is a simple procedure! 3-4 holes and that's it. I was at the hospital at 5 AM and was back in my bed at home by 10 AM and that included a stop at the drugstore to fill the pain med scrip. Can't ask for anything easier.
And BTW, I had my tonsils out as an adult, I'd have 10 gb's removed rather than go thru the tonsil thing again!

Thanks for the encouraging words, folks.
I am so terrified I can't think straight.
I'm scared of the surgery, but I'm also scared of dying from these stones, like if they block the duct or if the gallbladder explodes or something.....
So, at this point i'm scared of dying during the surgery, and even more so, while waiting to get it.
Do people actually die from having their gallbladder inflamed and full of junk, or am I panicking again?
THanks again for the help folks, coming on here is my last ditch effort to keep from having to go on tranquilizers until the surgery. I am that freaked out by this......

When is your surgery? I'm sure they would have done emergency surgery if they felt your situation warranted it. Until then, eat NO FAT...None, zero, zitch, nada. That's the culprit.
Then stay very low fat or fat free for about 4 weeks...and then slowly introduce it back into your diet. Fat is the enemy of gb issues.

I was just tested yesterday to see if I had a stone left and there was none.
Please don't worry! You will not die from stones left behind - what happens is your liver enzymes will go up and you get a fever and you turn jaundice. THAT IS ONLY IF A STONE IS LEFT BEHIND. Your bile duct will never burst from a stone.
I have been in your shoes believe me I was scared too but it is a piece of cake. Just ask for pain killers after your surgery. You won't be in pain but it will help you get plenty of rest for recovery. I loved the pain killers! I was so relaxed with them and I needed them because I worked myself up worrying like you are doing right now and my body needed rest.

I did alot of meditation before my surgery and it worked - I calmed down. Talk it over with your relatives to get your fear out. Talk to others that have had gallbladder surgery. Look up others on this board who had their gallbladder out you will find my post of how scared I was before my surgery. But believe I worried for nothing because it was such a piece of cake and I had no pain. I walking right after my surgery in the hospital. What a simple procedure.
Follow a bland diet right now.

Gigi,
I was reading your other post, and couldn't believe it...I have panic attacks, also!!! And I have the unwanted ability to MAKE myself feel sick. I am so happy to know I"m not the only one with a panic disorder. I am sorry to hear that you are having issues though. I hope it is just your panic disorder acting up, believe me, I know for a fact that it is possible for your mind to make you FEEL pain and symptoms that aren't "real".
Well, I cried so hard all day that my eyes are sore and I can't see out of them too well. I may have to go one anti anxiety meds, but I'm trying very very hard to avoid that......:(
On wednesday, at the hospital, I was given an EKG and tons of blood work, everything came back normal....so the only issue is this gallbladder.:(
I've avoided the fats, and since wednesday, have had no severe cramping attacks, just mild tenderness, which seems to be ebbing.....

Well after having the MRCP test - I found out there is nothing wrong with me. I had severe panic attacks which did make feel sick. I forgot how powerful the mind is. The doctor got so tired of me he told me don't come back unless you have real symptoms. Apparently the MRCP test sees everything - irritation of the stomach, tumors, etc.
I do have back pains which makes my waist hurt so maybe I was confused and did the fear thing (fear = false evidence appearing real).
Now when I wake up in the morning I don't have the pain anymore. Maybe I was always thinking the worse and then the pain appeared. Now that I had that test I feel like I have my life back!!.
Please don't cry! Just relax and do some breathing exercises and keep yourself busy. I do meditation and it works. I did the same thing you did cry and worry. It was such a piece of cake with the surgery. I did all that worry for nothing but I messed my insides up with stress.
I was going through so much stress with my husbands job that it messed my stomach up from the worrying. Now, I am going to take each day as it comes.
I am the worrier, the what if person. Then it turns out to be nothing at all.
I had walking pneumonia 6 months ago and I thought whoever gets pneumonia eventually dies from complications. I panicked and made things worse! I lived and I worried for nothing. So please try to relax and I know it hard to say.

Recent surgery, Before my recent surgery I explained to the doctor what I expect the outcome I want. This LA. Dr Viishul Kapor does whatever he want and have no regard for the patient. He will tell you one thing as if he understand what you want from the surgery, yet you'll find after the surgery he has done a completely different thing. Such as: he will tell the patient he will make an incision in one area, and instead he end up making the incision in a very different area. Also he will go completely against what you sign on the consent, which is absolutely illegal. He's young and very incompetent. I am so dipress from this surgery because now I have to live with a great deal of disatisfaction and he ruin my face which I can't hide from the world. If you are in LLA. CA. and seeking a plastic surgeon save yourself from a nightmare of Vishul Kapor.

Hi, I was nervous as you are last month prior to my gall bladder removal. I couldn't function because I was so scared. But I faced it and ya know what. I was not bad at all. The pain I had prior to the surgery was 85% more horrible than the surgery itself. I did not have to use pain killers. I just took extra strength tylenol. I did not have to stay overnight in the hospital. I left two hours after my surgery. I did have a little pain but nothing to make me incapacitated. It was an easy surgery. The recovery time was quick. If you knew me you'd know I am the biggest baby when it comes to doctors, hospitals, etc. I always think the worst. But with the laproscopic surgery nowadays, it's really not major like you think. The anesthesia was great - nice sleep, not scary and I woke up feeling happy it was behind me. Now a month later, I am back to normal, feeling great and hope you will be there soon too.
Good Luck.
Good Luck.

I keep panicking and crying and it's upsetting my family. When I get upset, I come on here and re read the posts, and it does help. So thank you to everyone.

Just don't cry - go out if you can and do things with your family to keep your mind off the surgery. Don't panic, it was so easy and you will look back laughing at all this. They do hundreds of these surgeries a week. It is so routine! So please don't get anxiety over it.

Actually the fright before the surgery is difficult to avoid. But with you knowing that so many of us went through it without suffering and without added problems afterwards should make a part of you realize that we're all telling you the truth. There are many on boards on line who make such big deals - and they are in the minority. I think if you need to have it removed do it quickly so you won't have to go around crying anymore. That's worse than the surgery, believe me. I was terrified. I read everything I could read about it on the computer which further scared me. But a few here on the board told me not to worry AND THEY WERE RIGHT. So judging from our good experiences I am sure you will do well. It's really not a big deal. I rate it a 2 out of a 10 all in all.
Don't make yourself so upset anymore. There is no need to. Of course the unknown is frightening, but you have something relatively simple to take care of so with that in mind, go to it girl. You can do it. We're all better off afterwards. You will be too. I'll bet on that.

I had a Hida Scan with EF done yesterday and the results were that I have 14% emptying after 30 minutes. The Surgeon said that my gallbladder was bad and needed to be removed. However, I went to a Gastroenterologist today and he said that 100% I should not have my gallbladder removed and that I should get on a diet and have a chiropractor look at my back for a pinched nerve. I don't know what to do. I've been in and out of the hospital in the past month ( 3 times) and noone has detected my Gallbladder until I saw a surgeon by accident when going to the doctors with my mother for her breast surgey. She's the one that wrote the Hida Scan with EF for me because she said it sounded like my Gallbladder...What should I do? I'm scared and very anxious. I am popping anxiety pills and pain pills to relieve my right flank pain. On top of all of this, I have a cyst on my kidney that has been there for years and will be having a biopsy on it in a couple of weeks. The Urologist belives it's benign. I've had it for many years. But I thought that the cyst was the cause of the pain. The Urologist said that it was only 2 cm and would not be the cause of this pain. Should I have the Gallbladder removed? I feel torn between a "SURGEON" and my best friend's mother's Gastroenterologist of the past 30 years...who should I believe? Please help me. I have to make a decision quickly. If it's 14% at 30 minutes, does that mean it should come out? I've been having bouts of dizziness, nausea, cold sweats, tingling, and numbness of my fingers and toes...is that my gallbladder or anxiety or BOTH...UGHHH. I need some advice from someone who might have some good advice for me. OH, by the way, I also have two hemangiomas on my liver. I was told they're benign as well. PLEASE HELP.

From what I've read and from my own experience I wouldn't rush into removing your gallbladder due to low function. There is a chance you can cause more symptoms. I would try your GIs suggestions for a while before deciding on surgery. You can't put your gallbladder back! :)

Have you had an ultrasound to look for stones? If not, I'd have one before making any decisions about removal. If not stones, you could certainly try diet changes but it may not help.

I had an Ultra sound which appeared to have no stones and I also have had a CT Scan with and without contrast of my abdomen. The pain isn't severe right now, but it is always there. I can feel the irritation when I am wearing anything that goes around my waist. The surgeon said that my GI is wrong and he must not be up-to-date with these types of issues with your gallbladder. She is leaning towards biliary dyskinesia that I have. 14% at 30 minutes with the Hida Scan with EF sees to be low, but again my GI says I probably have a pinched nerve and need to lose weight and change my diet. I'm 5'5 and 170lbs. However, I've never had this problem before. :dizzy: Please help...are there any doctors out there?

The HIDA scan result of 14% is definitely below normal, which is usually in the 30-35% range depending on the scale used.
The fact that your ultrasound did not show stones, does not rule out the possibility that you have "sludge", ie very fine crystals accumulating in your gallbladder. Of course it could also mean that your gallbladder is inflamed.
Tingling and numbness in extremities can be associated with pinched nerves. I don't recall anybody ever mentioning a connection to gallbladder problems, but.....
It is true that overweight folks are more prone to gallbladder problems, yet conversely losing weight too fast can also increase gallbladder problems.
It sounds like you have multiple issues, if you are not in a lot of pain, you way want try the chiropractor path first and see if that helps. If it doesn't then consider getting a second GI docs opinion.

Thank you for your advice. I am in mild to moderate pain right now, however, I think I may go to the Chiropractor and have her take a look at me and my x-rays. The hospital ordered me to have an MRI of my Thorasis and Lumbar once I left the hospital to make sure I didn't have multiple sclorosis or lupus. I went to a neurologist to have this done and she said my spine and everything looked fine. She also did a nerve test on me...no nerve damage. The GI told me that the NeuroMD may not have been able to tell if I had a pinched nerve deep in my back.
I'm so stressed out over all of this. I have been like a guinea pig for over a month with this right flank pain. Now my right shoulder blade is killing me and giving me a headache and I'm starting to have gurgling going on in my stomach along with nausea and flatulence. I am also having a bit of a hard time having a BM. But when I do, it seems a bit light-colored and has a possibility of blood in the crevaces...not for sure...can't really tell. At this point, I don't really know what to do. I also read that if I do have stones and go to a chiropractor, it could make the stone move through the bile ducts and cause more problems. God, I just want a "SURE" diagnosis and stop all this guessing.
I had a CT of my abdomen and pelvis with and without contrast when I was in the hospital and I gave the GI a copy of it. He only read the report that stated that my gallbladder, spleen, pancreas, and adrenal glands demonstrated normal contrast-enhanced CT appearance. However, I am going to call him on Monday to see if he saw anything on it that the radiologist didn't see in reagrds to my gallbladder. I'm so torn because I told the surgeon what the GI said how I should not get my gallbladder out and I should see a chiro, etc. and she said he must not know what biliary dyskenasia is. Because this is what she believes I have just from the Hida Scan Results along with my symptoms and if I wait too long it could get even worse...this is my dilemma. I have an appointment to see the surgeon to discuss this further on Tuesday morning...any more advice?

Mirshh, you certainly have all the classic gallbladder symptoms: pale stool, gurgling stomach, flatulence, pain in the right shoulder area. I and a few others have reported fluctuations in blood pressure due to gallbladder issues.
My experience with the CT scans and MRI is that they aren't helpful in identifying gallstones, etc. However, they allow the Dr. to rule out other things.
Did you do an internet search for gallbladder and pinched nerves? I'm not seeing much information about that possibility--not saying it can't happen, but.....
You might ask your GI doc whether he would be willing to prescribe Ursodiol or Actigall, these drugs can help dissolve some kinds of gallstones. I have had good success with this treatment. It can be long term and a bit expensive---depending on your health insurance.

Clay colored stools are a bad sign and would have NOTHING to do with pinched nerves.
My opinion: get to a doctor asap. If your stools are clay colored, that is due to lack of bile...period. Not just from your gall bladder, bile also comes from your liver..... SOMEONE needs to find out why there is no or little bile in your digestive system.

Well, I now have a lightish brown looking color of my urine on the toilet tissue when I wiped myself yesterday...sorry to be so graphic. Anyhow, I immediately panicked and thought I was internally bleeding...cuz I don't know. So I called the GI and he ordered a blood test and urine specimen STAT. I went and had that done and got the results the same day. The GI called me and said that the blood came out normal...thank God, and that my urine had a little bacteria in it. However, my mother-in-law had previously had Gallstones and Kidney stones and when I went to her house, I had to use the bathroom and she said that there looked as if there was a few very small granduals (sand-like) pieces of stones. I don't know. I also went to my primary yesterday afternon because I needed something to take away my STRESS over all this until it's over...cuz it's been a month and I feel like I'm going crazy. My primary was great and sat with me and my husband for a good half hour and I wasn't even really scheduled. After I told him what the GI said and what the Surgeon said along with all the tests and my symptoms. his reccommendation was to have the surgey and he's quite a conservative doctor. Anyhow, I have the appointment with the Surgeon today at 10:45AM. I will tell her everything and see what she has to say. I've decided to go ahead with the surgey. I can't take anymore of this discomfort. Are there any questions that you think I should ask her or do you think I have 2 things going on now?...gallbladdder infection and kidney stones? Not sure --I still have the pain in my right shoulder blade, my upper right quadrant (under rib cage and just below it), a headache, and NOW I have pain in my lower backside and finally my front right lower side (just above my hip bone) has sharp on and off pains. I also feel very cold at times. My blood pressure is still fluctuating to the lower side along with my temperature. My temp this AM was 96.3. It's not that low, but I usually run up in the 98 range and my blood pressure is usually 120/79 and it's running in the 100/66 or even 98/64 at times. I know it's still normal, but I feel dizzy as well off and on. Please tell me your thoughts or if you have any advice for me, I greatly appreciate it. You've all been so great helping me. I don't feel so alone. Thanks again.

Maryinpa - how did your surgery go? Are you having much pain 2 days after the procedure? I just saw the surgeon today and my surgery is scheduled for a week from tomorrow...6am on July 16th. Supposedly, it's a 1-hr surgery and I should be on my way home by mid to late morning, assuming all goes as planned!

Yes - I had the surgery on Wednesday, July 1st. I stayed in the hospital for 2 days afterwards. I had alot of pain the 1st day...but my back was contributing to that as well. I and some others believe that I may had possibly passed kidney stones just before the surgery. I was still passing brownish urine for 3 days after surgery, but it finally cleared up from all the antibiotics, I think. Anyhow, the pain is not that bad from the actual gallbladder surgey. I think the hardest part was trying to breathe into this respiratory gadget they give you after surgey to strengthen your lungs after anesthesia. I was having a very low reading...500 to 1000 at best. This is because they cut into your diaphragm. I still have the numbness in my toes and fingers off and on...I DO believe that I also have another issue going on with either a pinched nerve or something. I will be following up in a few weeks with a chiropractor and taking all my xrays. I don't know what else to do. They had to give me Demerol shots in the hospital and morphine pills for my pain. However, it is very important to get up and start walking as soon as possible...day after surgey. Good luck with you and don't be afraid...you get the general anesthesia and then you wake up in recovery...not that bad. They also kept me on a normal diet. Oh, the only other thing that was very bothersome and painful for me was that I didn't have a BM for 3 days and that made my back hurt ALOT. Finally, after some M.O.M., (milk of magnesia) I was back to normal. Good luck and God Bless You. The scars are VERY minimal. Talk to you soon.

Hi.
I survived the surgery...
I am still a bit sore, but boy do I feel yucky, weak and tired ......
I expected to bounce back faster than this......
Hopefully, I'll be back to my old self soon.
Anybody worried about blood clots? I didn't know this was a possibility.....now I'm scared.

5 days out you don't need to worry about blood clots. Any time you have surgery - that is, cutting into you - that's a possibility. So, you've gotten past the worse. Try to walk as much as you can. That will help! So glad to hear you made it thru....had been patiently awaiting an update. Just think - no more gallbladder attacks now!
