It is very possible your partner had oral herpes all along and the sun activated it. When he got home and performed oral sex on you, you could have recieved genital herpes type 1 from him.
Oral herpes is very common, about 80% of all adults over 50 have it and they mostly get it in childhood from casual kissing of relatives. Many do not know they have it until it gets activated by stress or sun or just lowered immune system.
Your children would not get genital herpes from you but could get it if your partner kisses them when the virus is active. This happens all the time so don't worry about it too much.
Genital type 1 rarely recurs and if it does only a few times once a year and is mild. (There are exceptions of course).
Since you are in a relationship with someone who already has herpes type 1, you don't have to worry about reinfecting each other.

thank you for this i have been on every site, reading about herpes, could not find any information about passing it to children.i know oral herpes is just a cold sore, but genital herpes is so painful, and much more shameful,we have told no-one,mostly because they would jump to conclusion about his hols, but i trust him. we were woried about passing it back to each other too, taught we would have to use condoms forever, even tho they dont fully protect you. we were very stressed about the situation so thank you for your reply and reassurance.
