Hello,
You don't even know for certain yet whether you DO have kidney disease. You may - or may not. I don't know what part of the world you happen to be in right now, or what kind of health insurance coverage you have, but try to get to a doctor's office and do some more blood and urine lab work, if you can.
It's not 100% correct that there is nothing one can do for kidney disease. There is a special renal diet which one can follow. It's hard, but doable. Keeping your blood pressure under good control is something else that can be done. If you have diabetes, then that's another factor and must be controlled, too. (But I don't know whether this would apply to you.) Also, try to reduce your salt (sodium) intake as much as possible. But like I mentioned before - you may not have kidney disease anyway, so keep positive. I don't have an answer re Niacin, maybe someone else knows about this and can answer you.

It sounds to me like you already do not drink enough water and could have some sort of dehydration. You may just have a kidney infection and are in need of antibiotics. As for the swelling, do you suffer from hypertension? I have the swelling at times and a water pill helps. I would see a doctor just to be on the safe side.
Good Luck!

Kidney disease progresses slowly, and it would be obvious to your doctor that read your blood and urine tests, and cleared you for chronic kidney disease.
Edema (the swelling of the ankles), burning upon urination, and back pain can be the result of a number of different issues. I would see a doctor to diagnose your current symptoms, which could be resolved easily by medication. I would see a doctor and get yourself treated before going on with your adventure.
Best wishes!
