Which is better?

Taking Nexium and eat a low-fat GERD diet?

OR

Taking Nexium and eating a regular diet (Spaghetti, BBQ Ribs, ice cream, etc.)

I am realtively new to the GERD world, and for the last 3 months have been med-free and eating very bland and low-fat. The commercials show people eating BBQ ribs and they're alright because of their magical little purple pill. I am curious, if Nexium is meant to combat all of the acid brought on by eating those fat, spicy, greasy foods; then wouldn't avoiding those foods cause the Nexium to have a different effect on your body? Many people complain, "I take Nexium and I'm on a GERD diet, but I still have horrible reflux." I mean, if the pill is designed to beat up the GERD monster, but the monster is no longer there, won't it just beat up your digestive system instead and cause more harm than good? What are your experiences with this? I would really appreciate it.

I myself would like to get on the Nexium and slowly over a period of months work my way back towards my regular eating habits.

If you take Nexium and eat a normal diet you will never get your acid reflux completely under control. GERD is a chronic condition that requires a combination of medication, lifestyle changes and diet to manage.

I suspect that many of the stories you read about people who require increasing doses of PPIs or who have PPIs stop working after a while is because they don't do anything to manage their GERD other than take medications (and they may even abuse their digestive system more because the medications make them feel better at first).

GERD is the result of an incompetent Lower Esophageal Sphincter - acid reflux medications don't solve that problem, they just help minimize acid to keep it from damaging your esophagus. It takes more than medication to manage GERD.
