I have a question,I was approved at my hearing in April.SSA decided I need a representative payee to manage my benefits for my interest and they appointed my wife,It states in the paperwork that she will "may" have to file an accounting report on how the payments were used ect.. and make all supporting records available for review if requested by SSA.Can someone shed some light on this and how it works?

from what i know, they supposed to have an account deticated just to your ss funds, and if ssa says so, every month you'd probably have to show them what the money was spent on (making sure it's for you, basically). that's all that i've heard/seen. sorry couldn't be more help.

I'm the representative payee for my grown son. His money has to be kept separately from mine, in a special account. The bank will set this up. Each year I get a form from SSA asking basic information - how much was spent on certain items, how much was left over/saved. A few very simple questions, maybe 4-5, not complicated like an income tax form. SSI money is different from SSDI money in how it can be spent. My only problem is that my record of what income actually arrived is different from the amount they tell me in the letter. Could be because these last few years have been a mix of SSI, SSDI, repayments of SSI, and lump sum payments. I just do the best I can. I figure if they have a problem with it, they will call me. They weren't very helpful over the phone.

The critical thing is, keep the money in a separate account and it will make the reporting much easier. My son has certain bills he is responsible for, and a check is written out of his account for them. All his clothes, his movies, dinners, haircuts, phone, doctor bills, etc, basically anything that is his alone, comes out of his account. We buy our food separately at the grocery store, and his food comes out of his account. Debit card or check gives you the paper trail to prove the expenses. I've filed the report twice and haven't yet been asked for proof.

Well since I've become sick I was the sole provider and my wife has had to quit work to help me plus we have a child she takes care of.My in-laws have helped us for over 3 years digging into their retirement for the basic utilities and even paid off my mortgage which I owe them a great deal of money which I agreed to pay back with a portion of the back pay.We will have to pretty much live off of my social security disability,I have not had the money or have been well enough to do home repairs and it has gotton to the point we need a new home, roof leaks, floor damages ect....Alot can go wrong in almost 4 years, the same with our vehicle. Will we be able to get a new home ect.. with my wife being payee?I do know I will not qualify for ssi.

Why doesn't your wife go back to work? Are you too sick to take care of the child? it's hard enough for one person to live off of SSD, but a whole family? Your child will get half your amount, but that still won't help. She will need to have worked a certain amount before she will be able to collect her own SS.

Actually we can live off what I bring in per month and no I am unable to care for her.Our town has a 48% unemployment rate if that means anything, there are no jobs in this area unless you drive 45 miles to the next town

I wouldn't worry much about this....I get the same type of letter in regards to my children, who collect disability payments on my behalf. Simply put, SS just wants to make sure that the money paid gets allocated to what it's supposed to.

For example, each year they send me a form wanting to know if I have saved any of the money and if so, how much and etc. I just mark the box "no." And when the form asks what I spend their money on, I just list things very generically....i.e clothes, food, and general things.

Just make sure you send back the form, and I would be as vague as i could, but also truthful.

Hope this helps.

Regards,

Ex

Yes, they do...They include all payments. For me, I told them I paid off debt accumulated from waiting for SSD.

Just be honest in whatever you report....But you're not required to provide a lot of detail. In a way, I'd love for them to come calling and ask what I spend the money on...I'd give them a piece of my mind about their entire system...LOL.

I always have to fill out those forms for my son. I am the on on SSDI, and he recieves a portion of the benifts being my child.
Did you know that you can now fill out the for online? it is so much easier and faster to submit the form! Since it is SSDI it is very different from SSI. He does not need a separate account or anything like that. The questions are very basic. such as , was their any money saved? how was the money spent? Things of that nature. SSDI is not for the poor , and this is what is different about the 2 programs . SSDI also pays more to the disabled reciepeints.
you ought to be able to buy the things you need . No worries .Just keep in mind that the same form comes out every year . Your wife is going to be responsible for filling it out each time.
