hi, can you get the mental health person who went over your files to get a good psychiatrist for you and at least you would have a better idea of what you are dealing with. if you are bp you are right it is not general practice to just treat with an antid. they are usually prescribed to boost mood stabilisers etc, you are going the right route in learning as much about this as you can but there is only so far you can go on your own. a pdoc is the only one who can really diagnose your issues and see what they add up to. i hope you get some better help than you seem to have now.

It sounds to me like you're not working with a pyschiatrist right now? That should be your first step, because regardless of your diagnosis, you're struggling and that needs to be dealt with. It also sounds like you're messing with different medications on your own (sorry if I'm wrong), and that's never a good idea. When you go in first, you might bring some notes about your history (I know I forget to mention stuff if I don't). If doing that seems overwhelming, you could bring a copy of this post with you.
Bipolar does worsen with age, if left untreated. Anti-depressants alone aren't the ideal treatment, because they can cause mania, and in my experience don't help with depression on their own anyway. Some people don't tolerate anti-depressants well even paired with a mood stabilizer.
I hope this helped.

Yes, get to a good psychiatrist for an accurate diagnosis.
Strange that they gave you that diagnosis and are not treating you medically for it.
Is your main problem depression? It sounds as if it might be.
When did you begin the Zoloft again? For the initial month or so, it can cause both agitation and insomnia. For that reason, pdocs often prescribe an anti-anxiety med and/or sleep aid to see you through the initial period.
As the former poster said, don't self-medicate. But you must have gotten the Zoloft Rx from your doctor. The sleeping pills?
Stick with it, but get to a good doctor pronto. At this point, don't worry about accepting the disorder, just get the right meds and some therapy to get it under control.
Glad you posted.

I will try to speak to the nurse I see who prescribed the medication and see if she wont's to refer me to a pdoc. I am sorry if I might have sounded a little flippant in my post and I was wrong about having posted only 1 time.It seems that I have asked this question before and I forgot. I do understand, I think, Bipolar because my sister is bipolar and disabled because of it.I have never had the intense anger issues she has and have witnessed firsthand. That is another reason I have problems accepting the diagnosis.More level headed today after sleeping for 6 hours,I apologize again for being flippant.
althorrand,
no, i didn't think you were flippant at all! while rage is one of the symptoms, it is not always present. i don't have the rage end of things at all. in fact my anger response is severely lacking and i don't even get angry at times when i should. i just retreat into being v. hurt. the only time i get the anger response right is if someone messes with my kids! good that you got some sleep. hope you find a good pdoc as soon as possible so that you won't have to continue living with this uncertainty.

Hi irish it was late 2006 when I looked at my records,I don't know weather the guy even works there now and the records weren't kelp at the mental health clinic i went to but at another building i dont even remember where its at.The Zoloft was prescribed to me by a NP who I see when I am sick.I told her that i had been treated for depression so she had no problem prescribing me the meds when i was having a problem with it. I am currently not depressed, had a few spikes that all,and a little afraid i might get bad after vacation , I dont wont major depression.
hi again, i know this is prob repetitive but is there any agency that could help you get a good pdoc? it is not good to be having spikes 'rapid cycling" as the down afterwards can be bad (not to be the harbringer of bad news) at least if you know it is coming it might be easier for you. major depression is awful to live with or even continue to live with so i hope you get treatment for it all.
