3 years ago I started taking Spironolactone 100 mg for my acne. About a year later I noticed my hair falling out. At that time my diet was poor and I had experienced some very stressful events. The hair loss continued and after a year I finally saw a doctor for the hair loss. I was tested for Lupus, thyroid problems, anemia, hormone levels... with results that the doctor said were 'fine'. 4 months later, & continued hair loss, I saw a hair loss specialist. She tested my ferritin & it came back at 11. She said to take iron and continue on the Spironolactone. It's been 2 years since the hair loss started. My scalp completely shows through and I shed constantly. I am wondering now if the Spironolactone could have something to do with the hair loss. I had no problems at all with my hair until being on the spironolactone for a year. After being on iron for a year my ferritin only increased from an 11 to a 28. Has anyone reacted to spironolactone with hair loss & has anyone had success from increasing their ferritin and taking iron? I feel like I'm at the end of the line as far as options go.

Spironolactone is also used to prevent unwanted hair growth in women with hormone imbalances, such as PCOS. Many women with PCOS also have scalp hair loss, but I have never seen it get worse while on the spiro. You could be the exception.
