I have been reading this message board for a long while, so I'd like to thank everyone, for sharing your stories. They are all so helpful to me.The good thing is that I am finially done with the applying process, and now i will start receiving benefits in Aug. It took me 6 mths to get approved. But now i have another question? I recieved my award letter yesterday, and it didn't mention anything about back pay? i wonder if i will recieve any? Does anyone know how this works?? Any input would be helpful. Thanks!

Congratulations! I know you must be elated!
Backpay depends on your dates. They can go back one year prior to your application date, then you have a 5 month waiting period. Example: if you applied for disability in July 2008 and claimed an onset date of July 2006, they would go back one year previous to start backpay. Since the onset date was more than 5 months before that, backpay would begin at July 2007. Second example: If you applied in July 2008 and claimed an onset date of July 2007, they would go back one year, but then you'd have a 5 month waiting period, so your backpay would begin with December 2007. Third example: if you applied in July 2008 and claimed an onset date of March 2008, there would be only backpay from August 2008 due to the 5 month waiting period.
Someone please correct me if I have that wrong, but I think I've understood it correctly.

that's great you got approved!! i got my backpay about a week after my social security lawyer called to tell me i was approved. then like a month later i got an approval letter. just depends.

Thanks everyone for your support and info! I will consider all of the advice given to me for my back pay. I guess the good thing is,, that i will be getting something for sure !

Your back pay is determined by the date they say you became disabled, for example, I have been disabled for 40 years but had to except the date as March 2007 and only got back pay from then plus they took away my lawyers fees so I had practically nothing coming.

My backpay was issued on a Friday. So you may want to check your bank. I know mine hit before I even knew I was approved. Different strokes for different folks. Needless to say it was a big welcome surprise. There is a schedule of paydates on the SSA website. I know your day of the month of birth is how they classify when your monthly check will be distributed. Congrats on your win!
