Hi guys,

I need some help on quitting smoking. I've been smoking for years, and I have decided to quit smoking (again). I tried to stop before, but it didn't work out for me. I did the patch, but it only lasted for a week or so. The gum worked, but I got addicted to the gum that I went back to stop the gum chewing. I have heard stories about smokers going 'cold turkey' and it has worked for them. I'm doing the cold turkey route, but I'm afraid of what might happen when I start suffering from withdrawal. What should I do?

Dont worry cang1! I went through your EXACT same situation 6 years ago, as did my mother this past year. We went to therapy for it and, long story short, the best thing to do was listen to music! Nothing to exciting, but just relaxing music, like classical music or something.

HELLO cang1 the only way to stop smoking is to throw away all your ashtrays and find some thing else to do . i also stop smoking i have 16 teen days in! i'm on the patch to it's 21mg the first step patch. you can do it all you have to do is get your mind engaged and keep on telling your self your doing the right thing. i've smoke for 31 years. and i'm 43 years old and the only thing i keep telling myself is think of all the money i'm saving!! and it works plus i tell my self i want to be here for my family a little longer! start telling your self that while on the patch. and chew alot of gum to it helps alot. I hope this works for you .

Cang1 I'm at 3yrs quit cold turkey. You just have to expect to feel like S#*! for a while there's no way around it. Drink lots of water, go for walks, exercise, root beer barrell candies help with the nausia (sp?),lots of rest, and tell everyone your quitting so they'll understand when for absolutely no reason at all your a Pr**k. Oh yeah expect to be a little depressed also. But all this lifts after around 3 months. The first week will be the worst but once your through that you don't have to think about quitting the gum or the patch or the pill your done that's it.

It also helped me that I didn't plan a day to do it I just woke up one morning and thought let's see how far I can go without one, and some people on the board use the time counter minutes of life saved mony saved thingy but I believe that just keeps you focused on smoking so it is my advice to just quit and forget about it. Most important thing is to want to do it not feel like you have to and it's punishment that friend is the kEY.

Good luck I look forward to hearing about your progress.

well that was a good e-mail i got this morning? from someone one who know best about quitting this lady shot me out of the water? but thats ok i'm not smoking over what she said to me!!!! and thats how you handle crap like that ! if you don't want to save the money then think of it this way. your saving your own health that better than anything. and if you have kids your doing it for them so you will be around longer. and that will help you to.

I highly suggest exercising. It has worked for me in the past. Go bike riding or something, getting your heart rate up helps take your mind off smoking. Get those natural endorphins going. Good luck!

Some people can quit cold turkey and there some who can't? i hope you can do it with out a patch. i have 20 days with the patch and as far with the craving go. i don't have any. right now i'm on first one step patch) the 21 mg been on it for a month. nexts step for a month is step 2) 14 mg . can't wait getting excited. cause i'm really quiting for real!!! i have alot more energy to do the things i've always wanted to do. you know theres this saying ( one step at a time) what you have to do is please yourself not everyone else. good luck on your journey to quiting. i tryed to explain it to you last time. but when i did someone else said something else. that blew me out of the water so maybe that person can help you out better than anyone else!!! once again GOOD LUCK ON YOUR JOURNEY TO STOP SMOKING!

Hi guys,

Just wanted to update you on my route to being healthy. It's been 15 days since I had stopped smoking & I feel like @$%*. I want to thank you for all your support & advice. I picked up a new hobby to help me keep my mind off from smoking, yoga. I thought yoga wouldn't help me with easing the cravings, but it did & I am able to focus my cravings to something more useful. I did some research on music so I can play them while I do yoga &

I had the music play in the background & that helped me put my mind into ease. I thought playing music in the background would distract me from thinking about smoking. So far, so good.

Thanks for your support!

I thought I'd offer some support. I smoked for 18 years and quit 4 years ago this month in fact. :)

Now, I am not going to be one of those to sit here and lie and say it was easy.. The only way I found to finally be able to kick it was one day I was on the porch waiting on the kids to get home from school and was smoking my last cigarette.. I thought when they get home I am going to go buy a pack.. then I thought, wait, if I buy that pack I am going to smoke those and so and so on.. I am not one of those that can decide to quite mid-pack.. if I have a pack, I am going to smoke every last one! So, I decided to not go to the store that evening..
Next morning I was still ok.. started to get cranky by lunch.. then I realized the best thing to help was SLEEP.. I slept a lot for the first few days.. it helped pass the time..

Some tips I found to be extremely helpful was to chew on ice chips.. Anytime I'd go out anywhere I'd stop by a gas station and fill my cup with ice chips and just chew them.. this was probably the number one help for me.

Another thing I did was take my smoking chair off my porch (no smoking in my house) and also got rid of any cigarette butts.. the ashtray I emptied and put under my sink with intentions of bringing it out if/when smokers might visit. Basically I changed my smoking area so I wouldn't THINK about smoking everytime I looked at my porch!

I found that talking about my quitting didn't help much because it only made me think about it.. I hated the stop smoking commercials, because again, I would think about it and want it. It also ticked me off to see movies etc with people smoking. So I didn't a lot of channel flipping! Then came the dreams that I was smoking, then waking up and craving it all day.

One thing I remembered is when you have those cravings, just repeat to yourself that urge is only going to last about 2 minutes at a time and passes.. AND IT DOES.. I also found that it's OK to want it, as long as you don't do it! You can even do the motions with your mouth as if you are inhaling and exhaling and it's ok to enjoy doing that! Whatever gets you through it without actually giving in to it WORKS... everyone is different so you have to find out what works for you..

I hope some of my suggestions help.. it's hard work but I promise it can be done and that urge will totally be gone! It's been 4 years and I can say completely honestly I NEVER have those urges any longer.. the urges were completely gone by the time I hit 2 years.

Good luck to you and congratulations on quitting!

Another thing I was going to add was if you smoke in the house, make it a rule to ONLY smoke outside.. every time....Set one spot out there such as a chair or on the steps etc... that way you will stop associating smoking with various places in your home. That is a very good step...

Another step is if you smoke in your vehicle, make the rule that you will not smoke in the vehicle any longer either.

Sometimes these baby steps when you are working up to quitting are rather helpful in the end!
