I have been on plain HCTZ for over one year and priar to that i was on triamterine/HCTZ for about 12 yrs , I HATE THIS DRUG . It has all kinds of side affects ,just do an internet seach . I unfortunetly have to take it for high bp with water retention because im alergic to ALL other classes of bp meds , and I believe there are a lot of side affects to it that are unreported as well as under reported , forinstance 99% of people i know or have met have developed [some form] of diabetes while taking it.

Fabulous just what I need another illness. I am already not allowed to have pain killlers of any sort and I am so uncomfortable right now across my entire lower stomach i can hardly stand it, and they are unable to remove the stone until Monday. Too many people ahead of me. HCTZ has helped with my swelling so far but I am on blood pressure meds for my heart rate, and the concern is it will drop my pressure too low.

I have found great success with HCTZ, used in combination with BP meds. I have been on it for 5 years, with one side effect...gout. To combat the gout, which I only had once, I take Allopurinol 100mg daily.

With each individual case, different drug combinations are called for. In my case, my doctor chose HCTZ for me, because he felt it would give me the best results, with the fewest side effects.

What works for one person might not work for others, but I must say, trashing the entire medication due to one persons opinion is quite naive. If you trust your doctors opinion, then I suggest you give it a try for yourself.

p.s. never heard of anyone developing diabetes from HCTZ

I appreciate your comments and suggestions, I do trust my doctors very much and I have to go with what they are wanting me to do. I have been on a low dose of hctz for about 5 weeks and so far no side effects. Worry some about doubling the dose as they want me to drink 5 liters of water a day. They are trying to stop the stones from forming so quickly and help with the swelling. My endocrinologist specializes in diabetes and thyroid so I do not think she would let me take a drug that would bring that on either.
I thank you both for your replies.

I just hope both stones are not stuck in both tubes. I am still huritng.

Kelti,

Hi. I think you have me confused with kmatthew, who started the thread, asking "What do you know about HCTZ". No biggee! I use a combination medication Benicar HCT, which is a blood pressure medication with the HCT, the diuretic.

I agree with you about keeping track of your medication information, it sounds like you have a good system going, and you are very organized. I'm not anymore.

I take 13 medications a day, and my pharmacy gives me a printout whenever my regime changes. I keep that card with me, everytime I see a doctor, or go to the hospital. I

What health issues do you have, that brought you to the boards?

I came here about a year ago. I suffer from malignant hypertension, which has led to 4 strokes, kidney failure, heart attack...all at 43 years old. That was 5 years ago, and I'm happy for every moment of every day.

:)
