I am 47 years old and in the past year have started perimenopause. I've been to the doctor and she said that I'm fine. She did put me on the pill which seems to have taken care of the night sweats BUT - I now have hot flashes that soak me, mood swings that drive me nuts (PMS could come back with the pills), and a feeling of self-doubt. Any suggestions? I heard that 1000 mg of Evening Primrose Oil can help.....

Moodiness - join the club. I'm working on a strategy of eating lots of soy stuff eg tofu, soymilk (30g soy protein a day) and St John's wort for the moods. Seems not too bad so far. Evening Primose, B6, magnesium etc don't seem to work for me. Good luck!

Thanks Speedgal! I spoke to my aunt who is in her 70's and she asked if I felt like starting a fight with everyone and I said yes. She told me this will pass (hopefully it doesn't take to long). It's a natural process, don't fight it, understand it, and go with the flow!! I'll try the St. John's wort and soy. Thanks! :)

Just to clarify. My current understanding is that if you're oestrogen deficient that's when your periods start getting heavier, the hot flushes etc and that's when soy helps. But if your periods are lighter and closer and your boobs are sore etc thats progesterone and that's when the red clover and the yam etc come in. I think. But mines not making sense as my symptoms indicate low progesterone but those sorts of remedies aren't working. The soy is. Beats me. And in the end a lot of it is relative amounts not necessarily absolute amounts. Only thing is to try everything and see what works for you - which is what I'm doing.

Go to a health food store and buy a product called Phytoestrogen, it works great for moodiness. I ran out once and was a real B----!!!!!!!! Got some and was fine again. Worth the $18.99 per month..........
