i am going to apply for social sec. i got my statement from them that tells you what you get if you become diabled and it said I do not have enough credits. i am confused. i am 33 but i have worked full time ever since i was legally able to work at 15. and worked summers before always paying taxes. when i turned 21 i became a deputy and did not quit working until a few years ago. there is no question that i am disabled. i would love to be able to work i miss my job so much. i do not understand how i can be told i do not have enough credits. my husband said they are just discouraging people to apply. i have a meeting with a lawyer today. any ideas as to this not enough credit mess.

Just go see your attorney. He will guide you the right way on what to do.

Perhaps, over the years you worked, did your place of employment have a retirement fund ? Employees were placing tax money into the retirement fund, instead of paying Social Security taxes? This is one example of why a employee would not have enough social security work credits , despite years of being employed, the employee did not pay into Social Security Taxes . I know That teachers also have retirement funds , or any state workers could fall under this catorgory.
They could , however still be entitled to SSI benifits . Although not as much as SSDI would pay a disabled individual , it is anther program that Social Security pays for people who are fully disabled who meet the requirements of S.S.
You ought to be able to have your retirement money as well, through your place of employment if this is the case in your situation, however, please check with your Lawyer.

When did you last work? The work credits "roll off" after 5 years, which means the disability insurance also ceases. However, if one provides proof they were disabled before the credits rolled off, a person can qualify for SSDI even if they don't have enough credits "today". This happened to me.

there's a certain amount that you must make in order for it ot be considered a credit. maybe it wasn't enough that you were making for it to be a credit...
