I'm 36 and just discovered I'm in early menopause, I've been on HRT (Estracombi) but it didn't suit, now my gynie has put me on Fosomax. So far its going good but a little worried about any side effects & bad info I've read about it. Can anyone enlighten me.

I have never heard of that particular drug. However, try webmd, you can look up all kinds of drugs and their side effects, or you gcould go to any search engin and try looking it up that way.

hello...may i ask what type of symptoms you were having and exactly how your dr diagnosed you as menopausal?...i'm a year younger than you and i think i may be in the beginning stages of menopause..i have a gyn appt next week to discuss my symptoms with my dr..but i'd like to hear first hand experiences too..my mother went through menopause in her mid thirties so i guess it wouldnt be so unusual for me to be starting this early........thanks in advance for you input.. :)

Hi, My only symptoms that I was getting was not having a monthly bleed (which at the time I was happy about) and occassionaly night sweats, nothing major. It was just that my friend and sister pushed me into getting it checked out as they reckoned correctly that your period just doesn't stop for now reason. So off I trotted to my gp and she suggested doing a blood test to check out all factors. Like over actived thyorid as I had lost alot of weight. My weight loss I just was putting down to been active with my new 1 yr old boy. So bloods went off and came back all fine except for my hormone levels. I next went to a Gynie and he did more blood test and confirmed I was early menopausal. Reading your email it does sound like your very similar to myself. I do hope all goes ok with your appt's - let me know how you get on.

Fosomax is for osteoporosis so unless you have osteoporosis I am not sure why your doc put you on that medication. It is rather expensive and is stictly an osteoporosis medication. If they haven't done a bone density scan yet to see if you have osteoporosis then I have no clue why your doc even prescribed this drug. I would check with your doc if he hasn't tested and diagnosed you with osteoporosis to find out more.

hi louise :)..thanks for the reply..i've been experiencing (for about the last 1.5 yrs) a noticable change in menstrual flow (very light/only lasts 4 days), irregular (i think..have never been clear as to what "irregular" means to a GYN)--my cycle runs anywhere from 19-35 days...i get hot flashes several times/week (thought they might be BP related but have checked BP during a hot flash and it was normal)..night sweats very rarely...very low libido, almost nonexistant..i have a GYN appt on 6/10 so i guess he'll check everything out then. :)

Hi mlgable,
Thanks for the info on Fosomax, I have decided not to take it, reckon he (my gynie) was just giving me something to keep me quite, as I had too many questions for him. I had done alot of reading about it and it didn't get a great report, so I stopped taking it myself. I am on HRT again and I'm going to give it 6 months and see how it suits me. So far so good, but its early days. My GP has organised a bone density scan in 2 weeks time and at least I'll have that to go by. My GP is a woman and she's great, understand and supportive, just what I need at this time.

Early Menopause is diagnosed by checking FSH hormone level as well as estogen levels. Normally women who have not had a period for one year, and have high FSH levels are considered post menopausal.

Women who go through menopause early are at a much greater risk of developing osteoporosis, which is why your doctor has you on the Fosomax. I would advise you to talk to your doctor further on whether you should take it or not.

Hi Faith,
I had a great chat with my GP and between us we decided to go ahead with the HRT and opt out from taking Fosomax for the moment. I had my bone density scan and its results were normal. I'm going to take and keep to a healthy (well fairly) diet and do a bit of walking to keep my bones strong. So far on the HRT I am doing great. No side effects this time around, I'll keep you all posted....

People who use HRT or who don't have osteoporosis do not usually need fosomax. I am sure that all depends on the doc but most docs in the Madison WI area prefer to run the bone density tests if you can't take or opt not to take HRT and if you are ok or only have ostopenia ( the forerunner of Osteoporosis) they recommend a good calcium supplement to keep your bone mass up and recheck your bone denisity via a scan in a couple of years. Both of my parents have osteoporosis which puts me at greater risk but calcium is all that is recommend for me at this time since I do not have Osteoporosis.
