i am 34 years old. i have been having, menopausal symptoms for 2 1/2 years, right after my tubal
I have four children. Started my period when i was 11. Was not on birth control a long time -did try depo provera shot- made me very ill. No miscarriages. My symptoms are as follows. depression, exhaustion, night seats, loss of hair, graying of hair, sharp abdominal pains, memory poor, proplems sleeping, emotional mess- if I start crying I can't stop, loss of libido, heart palpitations and extreme irritabliity. I have been taking over the counter meds. menopausal supplemants, evening prim rose and omega 3 oils that helped a great deal. I am also on an antidepressant right now. I have been to the family dr. with no good results. Going to the Gyn for verification this week . Very angry with med community at this point.I know there is something very differant and wrong.

Hi Beth Ann

Answers to early menopause poll.

1. Noticed symptoms at age 37. I'm 45 now.
2. No symptoms now, I'm on HRT, but had them all. Night sweats, depression, mood swings, weight gain (all in the middle) exhaustion from lack of sleeping, hair loss, pre-mature grey, brain fog, loss of libido, irregular periods, just plain cranky all the time.
3. I have two children, age 29 and 23.
4. I have never miscarried.
5. I have had one abortion. Had one fallopian tube removed due to a bad infection, the other tied. Guess I was that .0001% chance that it could happen to. I was scheduled for back surgery. My physician was the one who recommended I do not have another child at the time. I was 25.
6. No hysterectomy.
7. I was 13 when I had my first period.
8. Had PMS problems, but not until my late 20's and early 30's.
9. No problems with acne.
10.I'm not fatiqued now, I was without any meds.
11.I'm on medication now. 0.9 mg of premarin and 100 mg of prometrium.
12.I do go off my meds for a few months at a time, and do take herbal supplements.
13.I did take birth control pills, but only for about 3 years.
14.Yes, premature gray. (Thank god for hair color)
15.Never had problems with doctors believing me.
16.No poor memory, but I did notice the occasional "can't remember what I was doing at the time."

I know the risks of HRT, but, right now, they are the only thing that seems to really help me with Menopause. My husband is afraid every time I go off them and resort to herbal supplements. He can notice the change in just a few short weeks.

Hope this helps.

Take Care!

Hi beth ann,
I'm 41 yrs old, and have started having messed up periods for the past two yrs. My gynocologist and my family doc said it was from stress. I'd have hot flashes on and off at times but nothing too bad. Things got worse lately. I haven't gotten my period in 4 months and I was suffering from horrible hot flashes and night sweats that kept me up almost all night. Finally my gyno. agreed to have me tested fom menopause and the results were positive! He said that I should start HRT, but I wanted to try something natural first, and tried soy-I had read so mugh about it. I'm not exaggerating but in two days my hot flashes and night sweats were gone!
To answer your other questions:
-I have two kids
-no miscarriages or abortions
-no hysterectomy
-first period at twelve and a half
-no major pms ever
-no acne
-no medications ever
-no herbal supplements
-no birth control pills
-yes, premature gray
-yes,brain fog
Also I'm losing lots of hair, and I have become very sun sensitive.
I've had major life changes lately, that caused a lot of stress, and I'm wondering if that's related in any way.

yes, all this is me...but I actually know the reason I have this. A tubal ligation at age 30.
Here's my answers:
1. At what age did you first notice symptoms? 30
2. What symptoms do you have? I had : sharp pains over ovaries,cysts,hair-loss,insomia,fatigue,dry skin,emotional symptoms,weight gain,decreased sex drive,decreased arousal,memory loss...
3. Do you have kids? 5, one in heaven
4. Have you ever miscarried? I lost one of the five see below
5. Have you ever had an abortion? A medically induced one from using birth control pill. I became pregnant when I skipped some doses...then I found I was pregnant, got all excited then the baby died. Dr. said that the third action of the Pill is to decrease blood supply to uterine lining if baby attaches, and they die. Too bad I hadn't read the Physician Desk Reference!! Planned barrenhood never told me!
6. Have you had a hysterectomy? Yep,age 31 for massive hemmorhaging-dr wanted me to do bc pill but I had bad feelings from my miscarriage and said no. He said tubals may play a part in future hysterectomy necessity.
7. Did you start having your period at an early age?I was 14
8. Did you have PMS problems? not really. just heavy periods.
9. Do you have problems with acne? never
10. Are you fatigued a lot? yes
11. Are you on any medications? yes, special time- release T3 for Wilson's Thyroid Syndrome. I've lost 17 lbs!
12. Do you take any herbal supplements? Loads
13. Have you ever taken birth control pills, and if so,
how long were you on them? Yes, bad mistake! 2 yrs.
14. Do you have premature graying hair? hair loss instead.
15. Have you had trouble with doctors believing you?yes.
16. Do you have poor memory?- Who are you?
17. What about "brain fog"? yes, but it is better when I go adequate protein- low carb.

Hi Beth Ann

In answer to your poll. I first noticed symtpoms at the age of 39 which were hot flushes, weight gain, excessively dry skin, loss of libido, depression, tiredness, irregular periods, nausea, bad skin and anger.

I have one dughter aged 21. I have had one miscarriage and one termination, no hysterectomy.

I started my period at the age of 12.

I had PMS symptoms in my late 20s to 30s.

No achne but very dry, sensitive facial skin.

I was extremely tired all the time.

No medication.

Yes I have discovered ginseng and this works wonders for the fatigue.

I have taken birth control pills for many years, 10 then with breaks in between.

I do have premature greying hair.

My doctor did believe me and did all the right tests and discussed the options with me.

Yes I do have poor memory, I am more accident prone and have had a number of accidents including falling down the stairs and I do have the brain "fog" but not all the time.

I first starte noticing symptoms shortly before my 22nd birthday.
I had extremely heavy bleeding and pain, weight loss, fatigue..etc
I have a 5yr old and a 2yr old
Never miscarried
No abortion
Complete hysterectomy in Jan of 2003, 3 weeks after my 23rd birthday 8 months ago
Started period at 13
Had really bad cramps
Acne problem most of my life...cleared up somewhat now
I'm so tired all the time, whether i sleep 2 hours or 8
Was on Premerin, took myself off
No supplements either
Was on birth control for about 3 months after the birth of my girls
No greying hair that I can tell...lol
It took my doctor a year and a half before he took my complaints seriously...kept telling me it wasn't gynological...turned out to be severe endometriosis
My long term memory is pretty good, although my short term memory seems to get fuzzy alot
I have trouble really concentrating on more that one task at a time and I get really flustered so easily anymore...I don't like being 23 and in full menopause

Wow! I started this poll a while back, and didn't get any responses. Now I've gotten several. It has been interesting reading everyone's responses. I started having perimenopause symptoms at 29. I do not have any children and have often wondered if that might have contributed to the fact I went into this so early. I have a few friends who also started having symptoms very young, and do not have kids. But, after reading everyone's responses, I can see that several of you who have children started dealing with this early also. I am forever trying to figure all this out, and wonder why some women suffer when others do not. I have 3 sisters (all older - one is 45, one is 48, and one is 51, and I am 35), and none of them (not even my mom) have ever gone through any of this. Sometimes I just feel like a freak of nature.

Beth Ann, you started an interesting post. I have always been curious about the effects of a tubal, things have never been the same since I had one.

1. At what age did you first notice symptoms?
about age 41. My mother went into menopause early as well.
2. What symptoms do you have?
Painful, long periods, heat flashes, mood swings (and those are the good days! LOL)
3. Do you have kids?
Yes - twins
4. Have you ever miscarried?
Yes - one
5. Have you ever had an abortion?
no

6. Have you had a hysterectomy?
I want one, need one, and am waiting for one. Still have not had it yet tho.
7. Did you start having your period at an early age? YES!!!
8. Did you have PMS problems? YES!
9. Do you have problems with acne? No
10. Are you fatigued a lot? All the time
11. Are you on any medications? Yes - antihistamines, Unithroid, iron suppliments and now Provera.
12. Do you take any herbal supplements? Yes - echninacea - it has helped me keep my immune level to a reasonable state, and helped me not get totally constipated from the extra iron.
13. Have you ever taken birth control pills, and if so,how long were you on them?
I started them in high school for trying to regulate extremely heavy periods. Was on them until age 27, when I went off the year before we wanted to try to have babies.
14. Do you have premature graying hair? Some
15. Have you had trouble with doctors believing you?
Oh yes! I've had drs trying to push antidepressants on me, when the real problem was nothing to do with that.
16. Do you have poor memory? I never used to, but now wonder how I tie my own shoes some days. I make lists for everything, but then I need to remember to grab the lists, and often forget them!
17. What about "brain fog"? MAJOR brain fog.

Note - the brain fog, the shaky memory, depression, etc was MUCH improved when I finally insisted on thyroid tests. My GP kept trying to push Zoloft on me, and I insisted depression did not cause hair loss. (And I lost it all over - scalp, eyebrows, eyelashes, pubes.) Within the first three weeks of daily Unithroid, the brain fog had lifted. I felt like I had my mind back!

I am still not there yet, and my TSH is still off. My GP does not follow up like he should, and does not do enough testing. But, I am better, and will be better still the more I press the issue with drs!
(PS - looking forward to my hysterectomy. I can't think of one reason to keep the uterus at this point. The fibroids are painful and large, they press on my back, cause excess bleeding etc.)

You have to read up on as much as you can, and print out the info, and take it with you to the dr if you need to! You have to be your own advocte, because drs see hundreds of people every month. You can't expect them to know you in an instant, or know everything about everything (even tho we wish they did). Be armed with knowledge. If your dr will not listen to you, time to find another who will. You should be partners in finding the cure, not victim of their degree.

Good luck!

Katymom

Wild Rose-
It surely sounds like you need to have your thyroid levels checked!

Your description sounded like my life last year, and my dr wanted to put me on anti=depressants as well. The trick is, when you are not chemically depressed, they don't do a thing for you.

Ask him to run a TSH panel on you. I would suggest not taking your primrose for at least a week before the tests, since herbals can throw off results.

If he doesn't want to (and many drs don't - they think thyroid is just an excuse, not a valid health issue), then find a new dr or an endocrinologist.
Don't take no for a final answer - you need to get your life back!!

1. At what age did you first notice symptoms? 43
2. What symptoms do you have? Tiredness, weight gain, shorter # of days for cycle, pre-cycle spotting, occasionally mid-cycle spotting, occasional hot flash, nausea in the a.m.
3. Do you have kids? 2 daughters (19 and 17)
4. Have you ever miscarried? Yes (second most devastating thing I'v been through); 7/7/02, right after I turned 43.
5. Have you ever had an abortion? Yes, when I was 17, just short of 18. First most devastating thing I've been through and my deepest regret.
6. Have you had a hysterectomy? No.
7. Did you start having your period at an early age? I was 14.
8. Did you have PMS problems? Crabbiness and cramping.
9. Do you have problems with acne? No...but I have started getting a zit or two around ovulation and also around my cycle.
10. Are you fatigued a lot? Constantly.
11. Are you on any medications? I am taking Ovulex (my husband is 45 and I am 44...he's never had his own child and while its not looking good for us, I won't give up trying until my 45th birtday), royal jelly, acidophilus, vitamins, and calcium.
12. Do you take any herbal supplements? See above.
13. Have you ever taken birth control pills, and if so,
how long were you on them? Yes, probably for a total of 4 years or less over my lifetime...just finished a pack of them last year when I got pregnant (nope, never missed a day).
14. Do you have premature graying hair? Yep, since I was a teenager...don't know how bad it is because I've been coloring my hair since I was 25 for a completely different reason.
15. Have you had trouble with doctors believing you? I guess you could say that...they never find anything wrong with me but don't bother to do any testing either. I think its all due to stress?
16. Do you have poor memory? Not really...maybe a little short term but there's always so much going on that I think my head just fails to hold it all in sometimes.
17. What about "brain fog"? Nope.

I find that I just can't cope anymore. I just want to do nothing. Life has been too full of stress and worry and fear and I'm on overload at this point. My coping skills are still there but I don't WANT to use them anymore. Am I making any kind of sense? Not trying to do a poor me, but it seems that things just don't really ever go right...I do have two beautiful healthy daughters (one of whom is pregnant)...and I am so thankful...and a husband who loves me madly (despite my fat self)...but too many worries have sucked the joy out of my life. Sigh...is that a symptom of menopause too????
