What is exactly provera and what is it for? What are the side effects? I do smoke and am over 35 yo. I also have hypothyroidism. I have heavy periods with a "slimey" bloody discharge too. (sometime mid cycle). So gyn wants me to take provera. I don't know if this will aggrevate my thyroid symptoms (brain fog, fatigue, etc) or make it worse. Any help or input?

He only wants me to take it for 10 days on 16-25 day of cycle.

How do I know my progesterone is down? I am worried that the provera will make my mood worse than it is now.(as well as other things) I don't need that.
HELP!

Provera is a female hormone. It is used to treat lack of menstrual flow, abnormal bleeding from the uterus, or endometriosis. It is also used to treat certain types of cancer and menopausal symptoms. Possible side effects are nausea, vomiting, headache, dizziness, depression, sleeplessness, or irritability. These effects should disappear as your body adjusts to the medication. I don't know if it will effect your Hypothyroidism, you'll have to ask your Dr about that, and it would be a good idea to have all your hormone levels checked.

I took Provera (years ago) for 10 days only. I had started a period, that just kept going and going. It stopped the bleeding, but my breast were so sore I was almost in tears. It is a form of hormone, but I don't think your Dr would give it too you, if he/she thought it would interfere with your thyroid. I'd sure ask before I took it!
