question: What's the difference between Hormone Replacement Therapy & Birth Control Pills? Isn't taking BCP's the same as HRT?
Thanks for any responses (I'm in the dark on the difference)...my gyn has just prescribed to me "Aleese" bcp's for my MAJOR perimenopausal symptoms (I'm 41)...I hope they help...(I'm going mad!)
Thanks, bubbly

Don't ya' just hate to post & not get a reply! Well I
agree w/ you. I think they're the same except dosage is
diff. At 50, said peri-menapause. Continue taking your
.625 premarin 1-25 + 10mg provera 16-25 then wait for
period & I got it. @54, said Peri-M. Use same rx. @ 55
said hormones said `went through menapause' long time ago! Said rx was keeping periods coming? I stopped a few mo. & periods kept coming? I did get flushed when
off rx so they simply put me back only at less mg. I'm
confused. Why do I need HRT? I'll ck. back w/ ya'.

i found this on the 'net, hope it helps answer your question. sapphira
Low dose birth control pills (BCPs) like Alesse, EstraStep, and Loestrin can effectively minimize perimenopause symptoms like hot flashes, irritability, mood swings and help with sleeping troubles, for many women.
BCPs work to decrease perimenopausal symptoms by stopping or suppressing the body's monthly ovulation. This stops our ovaries from making estrogen and progesterone.
There is a whole new group of BCPs like Loestrin that were created especially for women over 35 years of age. Not only do they function to help with the often disruptive symptoms of perimenopause, they work as an effective means of birth control. They contain just enough estrogen and progesterone to prevent pregnancies and help with perimenopause.
Today's BCPs contain a lot less estrogen and progesterone than those in the 70s and 80s.
When using BCPs all the estrogen and progesterone we receive will be from the pill. This gives you a steady and stable amount of progesterone and estrogen every day- instead of the peaks and valleys that our bodies make during perimenopause. It's these peaks and valleys of estrogen and progesterone from our ovaries that cause the flashes, trouble sleeping irritability etc...
BCPs are different from HRT (hormone replacement therapy) like Prempro because the BCPs contain enough estrogen and progesterone to suppress or stop ovulation, whereas HRT does not, it works differently and is not a form of birth control.
Using BCPs to help control hot flashes, menstrual irregularities, mood swings etc... is known as suppressive therapy as opposed to HRT which is to replace hormones that are either "lost" or need to be increased.

Sapphira, Like I said earlier, don't ya' just hate to
post & not get a reponse! Thank you sooo much for the
time you took to research this topic for us. It sure
cleared alot for me. Guess I'm menapausal & using the
pills as suppressive therapy so that probably means I
have enough hormones & this is controlling the flashes?
I was thinking I would be happy w/ no monthly. Then
the sweats switched me back. Don't like pills, but the
doc has to give me a better option. Sweats were awful &
made me grouch at everyone. Thank you again for help!

hi murphy, thanks for your nice words and reply.
i'm on the bcp and have been for a VERY long time. however, i'm afraid to quit now as i'm in the middle of the peri phase and i fear the symptoms you describe. of course, i'll probably have them when i stop the bcps!! you can't win!!
