Hello,
Ever since I was put on Neurontin in summer of '01, I began to have a somewhat painful sensation of what feels like an electric shock passing through my head. I got off Neurontin soon after that but the sensation continues. I am now on clomipramine, sonata, zoloft, abilify, lamictal, prn xanax....god, i cant remember them all, there are more I think (my mom insists on putting the meds together though I'm freakin 16 years old).....
I was wondering if anyone knows of anyone who has experienced this or if you have yourself.
It seems to be triggered by bad memories, especially embarassing ones, as well as lots of color, sound, movement, extreme detail, light, or patterns.
It feels like it starts in the back of my head and shoots through my eyes in the space of about 1 sec. Once in awhile it will be prolonged but mild and will hang around right behind my eyes. Might it be a good idea to try to induce these while on an EEG?
Questions, comments, responses....
Thanks,
Kristina

OK here are the meds that I'm on: clomipramine, dexedrine, prn xanax, sonata, abilify, lamictal, zoloft. I will feel like a moron if that is wrong.

That's interesting; did you do anything about them? Also did you tell a doctor and did s/he comment?

I got an "electrical" senation from {spelling it wrong} respurdol.
I noticed that I was looseing feeling in my legs, cause the electrical sensation was so strong it started to feel numb.
i'm off that med & am better now.

i always called this "brain shivers". i got them while taking ...or should i say while...not taking EFFEXOR. i would get these little shocky sensations in my head and sometimes arms, in as little as a few hours of missing a dose of effexor. it was very strange. I have been on many many AD's and AP's...But out of ALL of them the withdrawl from EFFEXOR was above all the worst! well withdrawl from SERZONE was pretty bad too. but ya, the brain shivers were from effexor for me.

Did they seem to be triggered by anything in particular, like the triggers that I mentioned above?
"Brain shivers"- yeah, I could see that being the name too. :p

YES music dont worry about them, they are caused by medications, something to do with the electricity in the brain, i get them all the time, watching the tele, sound etc all of the above.. i dont take any meds at the moment but i will be soon cant stand this anxiety i really cant.

Dipps-
I hope your anxiety gets better!! Hang in there! I hope everything works out for you.
Everyone-
Did anybody have an EEG for these and if so what were the findings? I'd love any information or anybody's own descriptions of what they went through or what these shocks felt like.

I got the 'brain shocks' coming off of Effexor. Mine were whole body 'pulses' that came in 2 to 3 sets of two or three back to back rapid pulses over a 1 minute period. This would repeat about every 15 minutes, and it lasted for the entire time that I was reducing my dosage, and about two weeks after I stopped.

I get these also but usually they are in my head and move through out my entire body. Had EEG, MRI and Cat Scan with dyes. MRI and Cat Scan showed nothing. EEG showed anxiety only. I hate to say this but I am disabled with a lot more then brain shocks but I have never even heard of anyone on so many drugs. The effects of the drugs themselves are so elusive that being on that many, it is not any wonder to me that you have brain shocks. I can't see you being put on so many drugs from just neurontin (which I take and is for seizures not anxiety or depression)unless your condition really warrants something like that. I think you need to see another Mental Health Doctor. I'm am sure you can get the same results with less medication using the right medications for you condition. This may take away a lot of you side effects. I was on seven medications at one time and I kind of worked out the kinks to get down to four that were really doing something. I did this with a Doctors assistance though, not on my own. I kind of documented what happened, and when, at the times just after taking each one. I have never taken my medications at the same time. I only put 15 minutes or so between them but it was enough to determine the ones causing problems for me. Everyone is different though and take all of this only as an opinion. Professionals know best but a second or even third opinion doesn't hurt. Good luck

We are now attempting to reduce the meds that I am on. My doctor also agrees that it's a little much and our second opinion was like "ahhhh! he's poisoning you!!" Luckily, for these amounts of meds, I am, relatively speaking, symptom-nearly-free.
When you had your EEG, did you have one of these shocks when you were being tested? Because I did not and so it didn't do much good for me. Is that the anxiety result to which you are referring?
What did any of your doctors make of these things? Mine doesn't really seem to know what to do about them. I don't blame him though, seems nobody's ever heard of them. I was glad to find, though, that at least others have had them. Er, that didn't come out quite right. What I mean is, that I am not alone. I don't wish to inflict pain on you all! http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/rolleyes.gif
I appreciate this a lot. :D

I did have panic attack symptoms during deep fast breathing in the test. Mostly fear of having an attack. I did not get the brain shock but I don't know what happened during the sleeping portion of the test. I was only told I exhibited anxiety symptoms in the test and nothing else. During the Cat Scan and MRI I got everything you could imagine.

Then you had these shocks during the cat scan and the mri? And it didn't show anything?

Not sure if this is really relevant but I am now off of sonata and have not taken xanax in months.

Sorry Music,
All tests and there have been many other types have never shown anything except anxiety. My Psycotherapy workup test for which the Psychiatrist were to work from showed: very high morals, anxiety, aggitation but not in anyway that I would do harm to anyone and depression. That is it, they said I am one of those cases that they have seen that have no specific diagnosis and there is not enough yet known about the brain and central nervous system to achieve one. Catch 22, but rather have the facts then the bs. I can live with that. Don't be afraid to test, I am one of the very rare cases that they have seen. Fear is your worse enemy. Good luck

Did they seem to have triggers? If so, what were they for you? So you had these as a little kid too? Have you been on meds most of your life?

My wife, at age 38, had 2 grand mal siezures about 6 1/2 years ago. No reason was found with mri, eeg, bloodwork etc...
First dr. put her on Neurontin. We went for a second opinion and new Dr. immediately began to ween her off, stating this drug was new with no track record. She was then prescribed tegretol and took it for 5 years with no siezures, but almost immediately after beginning neurontin she started having the brain shocks. She has been off of tegretol now for a year, siezure free, But the shocks remain. For 6 years we have been to numerous "dr.s" to find out what these are. Everyone has been stumped. We thought we were alone until I found this site. Thank you.
p.s. she will go in to hospital next week for 7 to 10 days for a "video taped eeg".

james, I've had those my whole life too... and yea, music, they're usually triggered by bad/weird memories... I just feel this weird pulse thing through my head and it usually makes me gasp/groan and clutch onto whatever is in my hands so I guess it kinda goes through my whole body...
