My wife had been taking 3 mg of Xanax per day for the past couple of years (2-3) and recently weaned off the Xanax very, very slowly (usually in .25 increments over the past 9 months).
We have read a lot of stuff about Xanax withdrawal symptoms and she has had a lot of them. Right now though she is having extreme problems with constipation. Does anyone else have any experience with this when going off Xanax? Is this just a result of withdrawal? Thanks

It took me five months to wean myself off. If I tried to go faster I got terrible headaches and insomnia. I was in a support group, and people complained about different symptoms. A few mentioned constipation.

Benzodiazapines definitely affect your digestive system. When I quit Clonapin, I lost my appetite and couldn't sleep for about 2 weeks and also had other physical problems. Tell your wife to hang in there and learn ways to cope without that quick fix. It's very difficult but I think she'll find her mood will overall improve without the ups and downs - mine did. Good luck!
