Hi Everyone
I'm new to these boards. I have posted on every dental message board that I can find, I didn't even realize this board was here, the girl who told me about this board says my problem sounds more like a mental health issue rather then a dental one so, here it goes.
I have a BIG problem and can't seem to STOP! a while ago, I whitened my teeth with whitening trays, for some reason though, they would make my front teeth feel as if they were moving (and I don't mean like when they have braces on them) so what I would do, I don't know ehy I would do this but, I would push on my teeth to see if anything was wrong but now I can't stop! last time I went to the dentist they took an x-ray, they said the root & bone were both fine but if I continued, I could damage my roots. I have tried EVERYTHING Ican think of to get myself to stop including wearing my (top) retainer. I am so afraid of losing teeth (even one)! If anyone can tell me how to stop FOR GOOD PLEASE!!!!! TELL ME!!!

heya, i dont know what it is you have all i can think of is ocd, obbsessive compulsive disorder. when you do things obbsessivly or have compulsions. all i can think of for you too do is either go and see a doctor and see if it is ocd, or just keep your hands busy. i suffer from ocd and have 100's of obbsesions and compultions. while in the bath i scrub my body till i bleed, i have to constantly check stuff, like the cooker, the doors, silly things, when i go out i worry that i have done something wrong. i am on medication for this and although it isnt working for me it may work for you. go see a doctor and let us know how it turns out.

You could go to your family doctor and try somethinglike zoloft or paxil. They have relaxing properties and help with ocd-like nervous behaviors.

Also try relaxation techniques. Get some exercise.
Tell yourself, this is just a passing thing, to relax.

you sed that your dentist said there was nothing wrong with your teeth or roots, which means that yuou are not going to lose ya teeth. it is phyhcological, that feeling of your teeth coming out is in your mind. it is the fear that you have, of losing ya teeth, that is making you feel this way.
if you dont want medical help then keep ya hands busy so that they cant fiddle with ya teeth. to keep my hands busy i paint, im not a good artist but it keeps me busy, while i can concentrate on it. let us know how you get on.

Isn't it ironic that you are now cultivating the thing you fear so much?! Sometimes your mind will subconsciously attempt to justify its fears by causing them to come true. I just had to point that out; I find it so fascinating...

Anyway, something you might try is forbidding yourself to push on your teeth. Act as your own disciplinarian, and simply do not allow this to happen. I know, easier said than done, but I have OCD and this little method works pretty well for me. Some people like to use a rubber band on their wrist and pop it whenever they catch themselves performing a bad 'habit'...tried but true. Turn your fear to your advantage instead of letting it control you. :-)

some things they have told me to do to stop biting my finger nails:
wear fuzzy gloves that u dont want to stick in your mouth
put tabaccoo sauce on your fingers so they taste nasty and u wont want to stick it in your mouth
chew on gum or a straw to keep your mouth busy
color or draw
do crossword puzzles
do stuff with your hands to keep u busy when u watch tv (cuz thats usually when u tend to do your bad habits)

Don't be alarmed that you can move your teeth and they seem loose. Teeth are solid but can be moved, otherwise braces wouldn't work for anybody! So thank goodness they can...my daughters' teeth were a crooked mess and now after braces she has the widest, brightest straight smile I've ever seen.

So if you are lucky enough to have good, healthy teeth(some people are not so lucky) then don't do anything to damage them. Take your fear and turn on it, defy it......like, instead of fooling with the teeth... brush and floss them daily; buy yourself a fancy electric toothbrush and other dental health gadgets, don't eat sugary, sticky foods, etc.

Do something positive in the fight to keep your teeth, and remember as dentists tell us, our teeth are meant to last a lifetime if we take care of them!
