View Full Version : How secure is it to change my job after diagnosis?

Hi Everyone,

I just found this board and I hope someone out there can help me.

My current job has gotten so stressful that I want to apply elsewhere. Problem is, will an new job allow me full health and disability benefits now that I have MS?

I had my first attack while at my current job. Went on long term sick leave for 10 months and was able to come back to work without any problems. Unfortunately, I just can't handle the stress of it anymore and I've promised to look after myself a lot more since I got sick (no one else will). My work stress had become completely overwhelming, I need to change jobs as soon as possible!

I have been "able" for almost a year and a half now (my medication works for me), but I'm pretty sure I have to tell any new employer that I have MS (don't I?). I want to leave managerial duties and become a "worker bee" again, but would a new employer give me any benefits at all?? A pay cut doesn't scare me, but not having the option to go on sick leave, if anything happens, scares me to death. Sick AND homeless, heaven forbid!

Does anyone out there know about this first hand? I tried looking up healthcare on the net, but can't find anything specific about this (I'm not very well travelled on the web, really don't know where to look).

Wishing You All Great Health,

Di

(Oh, I am in Alberta, Canada)
