Has anyone tried using emu oil for MS symptoms? Where or how do you use it? A friend of my husband's raises emu and sells emu oil. He gave us some to try after being contacted by another person with MS that uses it for his symptoms. I was diagnosed April 2002 with R/R and have been on Avonex for 8 weeks. Along with the lesions on my brain, I have a large lesion in my spine that sends pain down my spine every time I bend my head down. That's where I'm going to try it. I'll let you all know what results I get. (Am I the only one that will try just about anything to help with the symptoms?)
Thanks!

I've used emu oil. My understanding is that it has some pain reducing properties, which is one of my MS symptoms. That is why I tried it. it helps a little. I think it is wishful thinking to expect it to help with anything more than that.

I've tried a lot of different things for my MS. After trying them and not finding any affect besides emptying my wallet I have become much more skeptical of a lot of supposed treatments for MS. When people have a chronic incurable disease, they can become very susceptible to unscrupulous scam artists, or even people who are well intentioned but ill-informed who are selling products which they claim treat or even cure their ailment. Not to say your friend is one of them, just saying there are a lot of such people out there. You will always find people to swear by certain treatments. I think a lot of it is placebo effect and also the highly variable nature of MS. Sometimes people have terrible symptoms and they just go away mysteriously one day. If they happen to be using something like emu oil at the time, they will swear it is a miracle cure for MS.

The bottom line is that there currently is no cure for MS. Even the FDA approved treatments aren't all that great to tell you the truth. The doctors don't know what causes MS. If you're getting the emu oil for free, then I'd say it can't hurt, but I wouldn't expect too much.

maybe that was more of an answer than you were looking for, hope I said something that was helpful to you. :)

I have RR MS too. I was diagnosed in June 2000. I have multiple lesion on my spine as well, and the doctor said possibly one on my brain stem because I had double vision. I have been on Avenox since October 2000.

What I have tried, and I have had good results with is Detoxing my body. I followed the book, Toxic Relief, by Dr. Don Colbert, and I feel great. I take certain vitamins and I juice several times
a day. The book outline a detox program that include cleansing the liver, kidney, and GI track by taking vitamins, eating certain fruits and vegetables, and short juice fasting. Then you go on to make juicing and eating healthy a part of you lifestyle.

I started the program in Jan. 2002, and I went to my neurologist in March 2002, and he asked me to walk as part of my exam. He said he had never seen me walk so well, and I was wearing a small heel at time.

Then he did the strength exam, and he said that I seem stronger, and he acted surprise. Then I told him about the juicing that I was doing, and he asked me to explain. He told me that he didn't know anything about how juicing works, but to continue to do what I was doing because I was doing great- just wonderful. These were his exact words.

The detox program made a difference for me. A month after I started, I could tell the difference in my legs and feet. It felt like I had new legs. I have been going to my neurologist for almost two years, and this was the first time he made these type of comments. I knew I felt better, but I didn't realilze he would be able to tell the diffence.

I suffer from pain in my spine too. What I realize is that the fresh carrot juice helps with my pain in my spine and knees (doctor said knee pain is not MS related) . I didn't understand it; until I read in another juice book that carrot juice acts as an interferon -- and the Avenox is a type of interfeon. The way I found out was I was juicing fruit juices it the morning, and carrot juice at night ( because I couldn't sleep; it helps with insomia too). Then I stop juicing at night. I have been working long hours 10-12 hrs days, and I just didn't fell like it when I got home. Then the pain return, and I realized the only thing different that I wasn't doing is drinking the carrot juice at night. I started the carrot juice at night, and the pain went away.

Recently, my back was hurting, and I had to go to a wedding. I didn't do the carrot juice the night before, I dranked 16 oz of carrot juice just before the wedding. The pain was gone by the time I got there. This is better than taking pain medicine; look at the other benefits I receive from drinking carrot jucie.

By the way, I don't take any medicine besides the Avenox. I used to take Vioxx for pain, Ambien to help me sleep, and Allegra for my allergies. Since I started the detox program, I have no need for them. I learn that the Pine Bark ( Pycnogenol ) and Grape Seed extract helps with Allergies, and I mention the carrot juice helps me sleep and helps with my pain. When you read the book, this is one of his statements, that eventually you will not need the medicines that you take., and it's true!

I don't know about the EMU oil, but I can say that the detox program has worked for me. Since you said you will try any thing, I recommend trying the book- Toxic Relief. It really gives relief !

God Bless,
Ally.

My mum has MS for 15 yrs now and has tried a number of natural remedies. To my knowledge she hasn't tried Emu oil before but has always said that there was a connection with her blood and her MS. When her blood was uhealthy her MS was at it's worst and when she went on oxygen her blood improved and so did her MS. Since then she has declined quite a lot and her MS is now worse than ever, although she is still always in high spirits. I was ralking with a man who sells Emu oil the other day and he was telling me that it helps un clog the arteries - that when the arteries are clogged it obviously reduces the blood flow - which i thought made sence. He didn't say he had any knowledge of Emu oil helping MS but said that is had assisted with numberous illnesses and would be worth a try. He did say it was great for diabetes which can be closly linked with heart disease. Mum also has diabete so I am thinking of getting her some Emu oil to try but the cost is so high and there really is no proof to say if it works or not! Like many people with MS or family members I think anything is always worth a shot but don't want it to be a waste....I have also been reading about MS being a vascular disease and having a low saturated fat diet. I went to Heart Foundatino website and read the recommended diet - which of course is what my mum has always bought me up to eat! Low saturated fats, Omega 3's. I think the diet is easily forgotten about in every day life but is certainly very important. I believe what you eat it what you are.

I wish everyone the best and hope for miracle cures! :)

I truly have to side with F-man on this one..too many scams and some of them quite dangerous.
Emu oil is not going to help with anything more then moisturizing. Thats basically all it is, and moisture, unfortunately, doesnt help MS. It will help with crows feet and small lines when massaged onto the face though....

Detoxifying is very interesting. You wont find too many Medical Doctors who will agree with the idea of doing it...in fact, my Neurologist has published articles on why Detox for any autoimmune disorder is very dangerous...It really does set the immune system into overdrive- and can definately cause an excaberation in MS patients. Even my nutritionist, who is a huge Detox fan, has told me to stay away from it....however, its very possible that your MS is in remission at this time and the strength and good feelings you are experiencing are quite coincidental with your "juicing'. Although Carrot juice is good for insomnia, its also inflamatory....it should be contraindicated for any inflammatory disease such as MS.

Watch out for scams...any man who sells Emu oil- is going to tell you how great it is....why wouldnt he? He is in business to make money...just like the guy who sells Monavie will tell you the benefits of Monavie...and the guys who sells acai berrys can tell you how wonderful they are.....funny thing is, none of them are proven to work and in fact stimulate both inflamation and the immune system. Both, are bad for MSers. Ever wonder how many of those 'Testimonials' are real?? You should....

There is a snake oil sales man on every corner...be careful of the old saying about a fool and their money are always parted....
