Just wondering if there's anyone else out there that feels like me or if I'm alone in this one?

Oh you will get lots of replies on this topic. It is a problem for many. Oddly while I do 'swallow the wrong way' alot and my throat seems to get spasms at other times, it doesn't throw me into a panic attack.
The spasms in the throat muscles do make me a little anxious but I find if I sit perfectly still, I will get through it.
However I am sure you will hear from many others who do have an all out attack when this happens.

What I meant was, does anyone have a panic attack because they think they are choking and might die? Not so much how you feel while you're having one. Sorry, I still enjoy the replies though :)

i think you misunderstood my reply.
what i mean by that is that i can start to lose my breath for no reason& that CAUSES me to have an attack.

Kaylee,
It comes with the territory. Some of my family think I've completely gone over the edge...I don't even try to talk to them about it anymore - they just look at me like I'm nuts! http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/dizzy.gif  http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/dizzy.gif
The best thing I've found, for me, is I try to get as comfortable as possible, (clothing too, if possible), get in a reclined position or stretch out, close my eyes and take a DEEP breath. Are you familiar w/breathing exercises? This has probably been the one thing that has helped me more than anything else...if I had to pick ONE! Then, if I'm still having problems, I put on a relaxation tape, and just try to get lost in it. Self help books have helped alot. I read alot on the internet - trying to educate myself on my condition.
Hope I've helped a little. Will look forward to hearing from you and how you're doing.

Yuppers been there, done that...Ive had PA's many times coz it felt like I was choking...I choked in my car one day on a bite of sandwich...My mouth was a bit dry and I had nothing to wash it down..Talking bout wiggin out this ol gal shorn did that day...It was almost like my breath was cut off coz I was afraid to swallow, afraid to pull over and get help or run into a convenient store for something to drink...Finally got it down but it left me in a state...Just remember,it won't harm you,the muscles in your throat and neck are tense...

First of all, I want to thank all of you for your replies. I had my first PA six months ago and ended up in the ER. I seemed to be ok until I actually choked on a piece of hot dog at a Sam's Club. I couldn't swallow, cough, talk or breathe. My daughters said I started to turn blue. I pounded on my throat and got it down. It was the most frightening experience I have ever had. I was alright for two days even ate some but then I thought I got a cracker stuck in my throat and totally flipped out. I didn't eat for ten days, lost a lot of weight. It's amazing how your thoughts can just take over even if it's a life or death situation. I have four children and I most certainly did not want to be admitted into the hospital. I went on Zoloft and am doing much better. I know that my husband and mom understood but other people did't and I really didn't expect them to. To top things off, two days before all this happened I watched my father pass away from bone & lung cancer. So within just five months I have had the three scariest experiences of my life. My husband says that they come in three so I am hoping my bad luck is done for the year :) Thanks again
