I was just wondering if anyone else is or has experienced the inability to acheive orgasm while on Paxil (or any other drug for anxiety disorder). I'm 21 years old, female, and have never had trouble having an orgasm until I started this medicine one week ago.
Does anyone know if the side effect will disappear after some time? I'm struggling with this whole thing, it's either have panic attacks and be constantly frustrated, or finally feel relaxed and not be able to have sex. Do I really have to choose between the two? What should I say, or should I say anything, to my doctor?

Hi!
i was only on Prozac a short time, but remember reading that it can cause delayed orgasm in women... the same went for Zoloft, Paxil and one other...
a friend of mine (male) was on Paxil and told me he had sexual side effects and hated it, but that they went away after about three months... he didnt divulge what his side effects were, but he said the side effect did go away.
if it is problematic, try talking to your doctor about switching- i hear that Wellbutrin doesnt have so many sexual side effects in women and men.
good luck,

Hi Angelene
Unfortunatley most SSRIs have this effect, It is something to do with the chemicals that are used during sex are the same or similar to the ones that are being altered to help with the illness. Look as it as a sign that they are working. Lots of people find it just a temp problem and notice an improvement although not always as often (orgasam) as it was. I only noticed a great improvement when coming off the meds, taking 20mg every other day instead of every day.
Please dont worry though all does return back to normal, and for me deff worth the wait because I was so ill. Like Raina said I have also heard that Wellbutrin may have less sexual side effects.
Good Luck

Thanks for the replies.
I'm still sticking it out, although it's really annoying. Sex just isn't the same. I'll let you guys know about any changes...
I do feel terrific anxiety wise though. I'm so totally not my usual obsessive self. :-) It's a good feeling.

I have been on paxil since jan. and it has done wonders for me, and I have not had any problems with orgasims, dont go off, just give it a little longer it is worth not having the problems that u went threw before, but if it keeps up ask your doc.
hang in there

Still no luck.
I'm on a lower dosage of Paxil, 10mg instead of 20, so we'll see how it goes.
Does anyone know what happens if you drink alcohol while taking this medication? A few places say it makes the drug useless (basically negates the drug) while others say it makes you violently ill. I just want to know before I drink even a sip of anything.
Thanks guys!

Alcohol is a depressant. Everyone is different but you can expect to feel low the next day or so and perhaps have some anxiety return for a couple of days. Other than that alcohol in moderation has been ok for me.
Give the 10mg time to get into your system and the 20mg time to get out. I hope things improve for you.

Hi sweety, I too have sexual side effects from Paxil.I've been on it (30mg) for 5 yrs.It seems to have diminished somewhat, but i've also cut down on the dosage, as far as consuming alcohol, be careful I found that one minuite I'd be fine and the next I would be totally out of it!!! It doesn't seem to mix well at all. I hope everything works out 4 u and take care. :wave:April

I'd like everyone to know that I was able to have orgasms while still on the Paxil!!
Now that that's out of the bag...
I'm actually off the medication now to see if I can handle my anxiety on my own. However I don't know if it's just withdrawl from stopping the medication or anxiety coming back full force--but I'm going nuts over little things again. Counting steps, getting so easily frustrated, eating emotionally, whining, complaining...grr. I don't know, I want to fix this myself but it was *so much easier* on the medication. Does anyone have any advice? Is 3 days off the medicine too soon to make any sort of decision? I'd like to know your opinions before I call the dr and ask to be put back on (or put on Welbutrin)...
thanks!

Hey Angelene, hope I spelt your name right.
I have a bad memory.
I am on Aropax and have been for a year.
I experienced a loss of not being able to orgasm too, but god help me I orgasm well now, no problem at all.
I was coming off the Aropax recently and had some bad news and experienced anxiety, and thought I needed to be calm and collected to come off them. So I too wondered if the anxiety was not a side effect. My doctor allowed me to go back on them until I am stable enough to handle coming off the Aropax. I know I can do it,,The anxiety has gone.
I hope all is going well for you and that you are able to get off your pills.
I am going to try again soon, and hopefully it will work this time, will let you know.
Good luck with your orgasms and good on you for being able to talk about it.
Max
