I have a 5yr old son. He just started Kindergarten. He will be 6 in October. He refuses to whipe his own bottom after #2! I mean he will sit there for hours til someone goes and does it for him. He has started school now and it bothers me because I know he will not whipe hisself so therefore he will not go to the restroom if he needed to at school. Then he holds it and holler's his stomach hurts because of it. Any suggestions ?????
Thanks!!
Thanks!!

Is there any obvious reason why he doesnt like wiping his own backside? Does he dislike the feel of the loo paper? (think about using wet wipes instead?). Is he paranoid about the germy thing? (Make sure he has "special" soap to make his hands clean) Is he convinced he will fall in if he takes his hands away from the rim (practice balancing with one hand then two in the air). Does he have a very sore rear end so that wiping is painful (check with the doctor and try wet wipes) Or is this a real battle ground where he has mum over a barrel? (get dad to supervise the bottom wiping - not do it for him).
Kids will play all sorts of power games with their parents over toileting issues as it is one of the few areas of their lives that they have some power!
But, also, bear in mind that bowel movements arent an all day, every day occurrence and it is quite possible that he wont actually need to "go" at school! Many kids are toilet timed and rely on their gastro colic reflex to "go" after breakfast or tea, just once a day.
Have a word with his teacher, she'll keep an eye out for him!

Thanks so much Angela. He says he doesn't like to whipe because he gets it all over him. I have showed him numerous times how to do it. I had to take his hand and do to even show him and even then he put no effort into it. Dad does do the duty sometimes. His bottom doesn't hurt or anything he just plain and simple does not want to do it. I have bought him special soap also. I have not tried wet whipes yet though so I will sure give that a try. Once again thanks so much!!!
God Bless!!!!!

I have the same problem with my son. He doesn't do it correctly so he would rather not do it at all. Wet wipes didn't work for him.
At school though, he knows that other kids will make fun of him so he does try to wipe there but the skidmarks are horrible.
I am just about to try bribery. For every good wipe done right I was thinking of giving him a treat?
Let me know if anything works for you.
Good Luck.

Thanks for your reply Maglib. I bought some wet whipes and it's going great so far. Second day and he's doing it himself. He seems to like it better than toilet paper because it has soap on it also. So he knows the soap will help clean what he misses, I guess. Treats did not work with my son but of course the whipes didn't work for yours so maybe the treats will work for yours. I don't know what to tell ya girl. All I know is try it. I hope my son continues to do it himself. ( got my fingers crossed ) HA HA!! Good Luck and God Bless!!!!
