I often get restless leg syndrome when I'm trying to go to sleep. It's caused by drinking Coca-Cola too late in the evening. It's the caffeine in the Coke that's the culprit. I also get restless leg syndrome and other muscle twitches if I take Benadryl, sinus headache medication, decongestants, or cough syrup. I can't remember what the name or names of the chemical is that's common to those medications. It might have been phenylpropanolamine. Dextromethorphan also does it to me. I also got the twitches when I ate or drank something that had a particular chemical in it, but I can't remember the name of the chemical (might have ended in ephedrine) or the food or drink that it was in. Sorry if this hasn't been much help. You should probably see a doctor.

Hi David,
I also have been having a lot of muscle twitches lately and you're right, it is hard to get any sleep when this is happening. I had a bunch of tests done last week and oodles of blood drawn but haven't been told too much of anything yet. Oh yeah, I also had a muscle biopsy done. Ouch! Not only are my muscles twitching but seem to be hardening or thickening as well. Not much fun. How are you doing?

hey David (and the rest),
do these twitches feel at all vascular in nature?
i'm having some kind of problem myself, but i've been thinking it's some kind of blood and veins problem.
it's strange. it's random, and it happens all over my body, mostly my legs, thighs, calves, and feet, but it also happens in my arms, my chest muscles, my neck. and it happens mostly when i am sedentary and at rest.
it feels as though blood as "squirting" beneath the skin, or something like that. and whereever i feel it i can actually see it. the area kind of "jumps" as though it's being tapped or something.
i'm sorry if i am asking about my own problem on your thread, but the suggestion has been brought up to me in a thread i made in the "high blood pressure" board. do you think i'm having your problem? does anyone have any ideas?

Hey guys,
I can't recommed strongly enough: CALCIUM for muscle twitching. Try it and see.
Milk and cheese for evening snacks (or a couple Tums before bedtime),
You will see quickly enough whether low serum calcium is the cause.
(Also that Coke depletes the calcium)...enjoy the coke during the day but not at night (at least not without a Tums- or any calcium source)

It is called Tetany. There are many underlying causes of it there is a world of info on it.

I have been going through some of the same for 4 years and counting. It started in the face (left and right) and gradually moved to arms, legs etc. I have history of facial paralysis, fm, sjogrens, tmj, thyroid problems etc. These "twitches" sometimes cause limb jerking (arm or leg). Throughout the night (I have been told) that both my legs move back and fourth like "windshield wipers". I have woken myself up upon occasion from this. I think that is because of the ache and pain of the legs. Sorry this is so long. As recently as March this year had some burning sensation in the knuckles and some other very odd things...
I have tried a few things. Neuro at the time prescribed clonzapam and depekote (misspelled). Was told by a few doctors I needed a lumbar puncture...Long story..I have taken calcium/magnesium supplement in the morning and a multivitamin at night. Sodium free tonic water (for the quinine) to see if it would help with the leg cramping. I need a good neurologist in this area. Before they were looking to r/o plaques-ms, lymes you name it. Had positive low titer ana and low IgM. I was given a Tetenas shot when I went to the ER for my shoulder.
Hope you find answers.
ps: I don't use aspartame anymore and now use Splenda and Morton's Potassium salt substitute as well as omega 3 oil supplament.

I the last few months I have had some weird health problems. I had never had problems in my life until April 2003. I started having heart palpitations and the doctor put me on a Beta Blocker. I was on that for a month and I got off of that. As I was coming off of that I started jerking or tremoring. The Doc said it was b/c I was getting off of the meds. That was 3 and half months ago. It had been getting better, but now it is back. I can really tell it when I am still or laying down, it feels like I am vibrating. I recently had Vertigo but that has been much better. I also was recenlty diagnosed with a begnin tumor on my Pitutary gland, but it should not be causing this. I do not know if it is nerves or what. Do I need to go to the Neuro? Does anybody know what to do or what it may be. Is there anything to do to make it stop. Thank You

I have the same problem. A muscle in my forehead twitches at night, but if I get out of bed and do some yoga, it usually stops. I think it's tension/ stress for me.

Try magnesium:
This trace mineral can change your life.
1. Magnesium is a catalyst in enzyme activity! Especially those enzymes involved in energy production.
2. Magnesium also assists in calcium and potassium uptake. That means if you're taking calcium without magnesium You're not absorbing it!
3. A deficiency of magnesium interferes with the transmission of nerve impulses, causing irritability and nervousness. So if you have muscle twitches at night - you might be lacking in magnesium.
4. Magnesium is necessary to prevent the calcification of soft tissue.
5. Magnesium protects the arterial linings from stress caused by sudden blood pressure changes.
6. It plays a role in the formation of bone, and carbohydrate, and mineral metabolism.
7. When combined with B6, magnesium helps to reduce and dissolve calcium phosphate kidney stones and may prevent calcium-oxalate kidney stones.
8 . Research has shown that magnesium may help prevent cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis, and certain forms of cancer. As well as reducing cholesterol levels.
9. It is also effective in preventing premature labor and convulsions in pregnant women.
10. Studies have shown that taking magnesium during pregnancy has a dramatic effect in reducing birth defects.
11. A study conducted by the Journal of the American Medical Assoc. reported 1 70% lower incidence of mental Retardation in the children of mothers who had taken Magnesium supplements during pregnancy. And the Incidence of cerebral palsy was 90% lower.
12. Magnesium aids in maintaining the body's proper Ph balance.
13. Magnesium has also proven beneficial in eliminating numerous PMS symptoms.
14. Magnesium deficiency can also be synonymous with diabetes.
15. Magnesium deficiency may be the root cause of cardiovascular disease according to Dr. Balch!
SYMPTOMS OF MAGNESIUM DEFICIENCIES
• Insomnia
• Irritability
• Poor digestion
• Rapid heartbeat
• Seizures
• Tantrums
• Cardiac arrhythmia
• Hypertension
• Sudden cardiac arrest
• Asthma
• Chronic fatigue
• Chronic pain syndrome
• Depression
• Insomnia
• Irritable bowel syndrome
• Pulmonary disorders
• Kidney stones
• Dizziness
• PMS symptoms
• Muscle weakness

I am still having them less now, it used to be a-lot.
It is not a good feeling.
I do have my tightness, big twitches, not comfortable at all.
It will take some time as he said.
he found what I have myoclonus, the new medicine is called neurontin.

I have been having the same symptoms for about a year and a half. Most doctors are very lax on what to do. Your problem is probably due to a low magnesium level. However, a simple blood (serum) test may not detect it. Only 1% of the total mag. level is in the blood, the rest is in the body cells, tissues. You need to get a test for intercellular magnesium but most doctors no nothing about this. One cant always make up a deficet by taking oral magnasium, they need an IV or injections to do it. Let me know if you are interested and I can help find a doctor in your area that will do this test. My serum level was normal but intracelular level low so now Iam talking an IV drip 10 times.
The other question is why can one be low on Magnesium and the answers are numerous, ranging from stress, to exercise, dehydation or even certain diseases. Low magnesiium can be a risk facor for MS. Please let me know if I can help
