Hi Barbara,
I developed symptoms when I moved from perimenopause to menopause. I think for some of us there is a hormonal connection. It is hard to find a doc that understands, however. Are you also menopausal?

Can you saw hot flashes and peri-manapause? LOL I know that my it plays a large part in my neuropathy. 12 before my period it is worse and now that I am on topamax this will be my second period so this should be interesting. My last one did not last long. The illness is bad enough but the drugs are like living in hell on earth some days. But so many have it much worse so I just keep smiling knowing I am still above ground.

I dont know if that helps you any...

I too have thyroid problems. I don't think it has anything to do with the neuropathy. I developed the problem before the neuropathy. I also have diabetes, arthritis, prosiasis, hypertension, emphysemia, and I'm anemic.

This amenia was a surprise. I have never been anemic before. On June 19, I was feeling terrible and called my daughter to please help me. I was completely disoriented and kept crying http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/dizzy.gif . I felt horrible and I couldn't seem to do anything right. She came over and made an appointment with my doctor. I had not urinated in two days. I was so swollen that everything was difficult http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/blob_fire.gif . When we got to the doctor, he wrote up the papers and put me in the hospital. They put in a cathera to remove some of the fluid. They also started blood work. That is how they found out I was anemic. The anemia was so bad that I needed 2 pints of blood http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/hammer.gif . (They still don't know how I lost blood) They were having problems keeping me conscious. My kidneys were failing. A kidney specialist was called in to evaluate my test. If I hadn't started coming around(prayers did it), they were putting me on dylasis :nono: . I am still scaried by this. It will be a week Friday that I came home from the hospital. Be careful with the medicines you are taking. I still think I was taking too many medicines (2 or 3 per disease).

Ohhh granny i am so sorry to hear of your troubles. I do agree though that being on too many meds is a very bad thing and that it could indeed have caused what happened to you. Thank G-d your daughter was there to take you to the hospital.

As for hormones relating to neuropathy. I think the state of our hormones influence everything else including and particularly any illness or disease condition we may have. Even how we perceive flat out injuries can be influenced by the time of the month. The question is does the balance of hormones contribute to the cause of nauropathy or does the neuropathy effect the hormonal balance OR is it some of both? http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/confused.gif http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/confused.gif http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/confused.gif

To all you ipn sufferers out there, yes I agree there is a hormonal connection. Even though my bloodwork shows full menopause, nobody has told my body that yet. Severity of symptoms is affected by what time of month it is. I also have hypothyroidism and had it before the pn.

Wow Barbara finally there is someone else who knows that 'rubberband tightness'. I kept getting looks from my docs when I was trying to describe that particular type of pain! Does something pluck the rubberband when you try to move? Not sure why but I feel so much better knowing someone else has had this sensation also. IT IS AWFUL! I wish all a painfree day :)

Hi Barbara,

My plan is to finally see an endocrinologist and have him evaluate my thyroid. My levels are within the "norm," but that does not mean it's an optimal level for me. We are all different and what is normal for a 6ft 4' 250 lb. male is not the same for a 5 ft, 100 lb female. I've been searching on various thryoid sites and I think there is a good chance that if the thyroid is adequately supported, the sensitive nerves can become quiet. Best of luck to everyone in finding what works best for you.

I just Had to bump this up to the top because this is a subject that I have been asking about on the thyroid healthboard. I am hypothroid. I also have cubital tunnel syndrome in my right arm and am confident that I have it in the left arm too now. I have just recently started having numbness in my right upper back and neck that goes to my right ear. I also have numbness and tingling in the badk of my left thigh that goes down under my foot to the tips of my toes. I think thyroid problems can be directly linked to a lot of the diseases and conditions described on this page. Is there anyone else out there with throid prolems too? If you've never been tested, you might consider it. I had no clue until I had the test. Hey, no one has mentioned hair loss. Do any of you experience that? I do, that's for sure! Someone mentioned lower body temperature? That's classic for hypothyroidism. Your body is not as able to regulate body temperature as someone who has a normal thyroid. Good Luck to you all.

I was diagnosed with Hashimoto's thyroiditis (hypothyroidism) 3 years ago after a fine needle biopsy. The test was prompted when my thyroid levels were off, and I had some tests which showed a mass on my thyroid.

I had been taking HRT cause my periods were screwing up, which was what threw off the thyroid levels. Ever since I stopped the HRT the levels have been normal.

I have never been treatd for the disease. Noone will touch it with the thyroid levels as they are. (I have read many places that this shouldn't be the divining factor in treatment, but in my area I can't find a progressive doc who will treat me) I've seen 2 endocrinologists, who said the sypmtoms could start at any time (they're just the same as fibro; how would I ever know?!!)

I have fibromyalgia and myofascial pain disorder, IBS, degenerative disk disease w/3 bulging lumbar disks causing peripheral neuropathy in my left foot, osteoarthritis in my fingers, knees and left hip, achilles tendonitis and plantar fasciitis in both feet, TMJ, migraines, a fainting disorder, and other things I can't remember right now.

I know that I've just begun perimenopause. My messed up periods a few years ago were caused by stress from the onset of fibro. Now I have the night sweats and hot flashes on and off.

Darlene, so sorry to her of all your problems. Do you post on the thyroid health board? I don't think I've seen you there. The reason I ask is because I see a lot of people with the thyroid issues that also have other issues much like yours. Thanks for the reply and I hope you have a nice, pain free day! :)
