With all of the strange symptoms I've had - I've been left with aching tired calves that have started to retain fluid by the end of the day - Totally not normal for me. When you have nerve and muscle stuff going on in your legs, does it affect your circulation like that? Any help welcome, thanks.

Hi,

I have swelling in my feet and ankles too. They finally gave me Jobst support hose, and it really helps. I wish they had done this sooner.

I would be interested to know of anything that I can take to help the swelling.

Yes I too have swelling in my lower legs mainly although this area is very obvious with my shoes unable to contain my feet and knee and calf areas so very tight. I can at times be on my feet for only 30 minutes or so when the pain and swelling makes it very difficult to walk. I feel if my legs & feet were to burst I would be more comfortable. I posted this site on 18th Aug wherein I describe more symptoms. I have not yet medically been diagnosed with PN yet seem to have all the obvious painful debilitating symptoms.
Perhaps the specially designed stockings/leggings/hose are the way to go.

I have pain and swelling by end of the day also, especially when I spend alot of time on my feet, and yes, mine feel that they are about to burst open too. It also goes from my feet up into the lower legs sometimes. Dr. gave me diarectics to take for it, I tried the support hose and it seemed like it made it alot worse and more uncomfortable. Its just the pits is all that I can say about this. I elevate them at nite in my chair and even have an adjustable bed that I can continue to do this when its bedtime, and it helps. Also have discovered that a pkg. of frozen peas wrapped in a towel helps w/the swelling.

I retain a lot of fluid in my feet, ankles, and legs, too. It is much less if I totally avoid salt. Also, for me taking any ibuprofen or and kind of NSAIDS at all makes it worse. A couple of meds for hypertension also caused it. I've had to change to others.

All this is a real pain (as well as causing pain!), isn't it?

When they're really swollen, if I lie on the floor and prop them up on something, so they're higher than the rest of my body, it helps.

Find out if any meds you're taking are causing it. Then try to avoid salt. I LOVE potato chips, but I don't keep them around - or I'd eat them all. I've quit salting things I cook and don't add salt at the table. I don't go so far as buying salt-free green beans, though.

Take care, everyone!

Stillwater, I do take med. for hypertension, but never knew that it could cause this swelling, will ask the pharmacist and see what they say about it, thanks for the advice. Also, I will have to try your method of elavating the feet from the floor to a chair, sounds like a good idea to me. This sure isn't much fun to have to endure this thats for sure, it interupts my lifestyle big time!

kael, how are you? I haven't seen you lately on the thyroid board. I've been checking this board out trying to figure out why I have some of the symptoms I have. Anyway, I hope you're feeling better. The last message I saw from you looked pretty desperate. I hope you've found some answers since then. Take care.
