is anyone out there familiar with any association with gluten intolerance(celiac disease and d.h.) and neuropsychiatric disorders, ie. depression, social anxiety, bipolar? being bipolar and having been on 30 some odd psychotropic meds over the last 10 yrs, and have not only not been stable but getting worse by the year, i have been researching the possible connection of nutrition and mental disorders. when i came across gluten intolerance and the above associated disorders, i was interested in the fact that i not only have ibs but itchy red pustules(thought it was acne) on face, head, and back. anyone think there is a connection? i would appreciate any input; getting a little desperate. also have symptoms of perpherial neuropathy, headaches, lower leg edema, joint pain, epigastric pain, extreme fatigue, and hypoglycemia. doc's attribute all symptoms to med side effects(believe me i take alot of psych meds), and i am sure they privately think i am psychosomatic. maybe i am, but it sure seems real to me. please help if you can, i need info now! molissa

Welcome to the Board

This is a great resource for finding lots of suggestions to questions.

I'm sorry you're not feeling well. Doctors are great at trying to convince us it's psychosomatic whenever they are stumped. Truth is, it's probably a food-related allergy (but that's my soap box).

Anyway, I posted an answer (just my opinion really) to your question under the other gluten intolerance thread before I saw this one. I just wanted to offer my welcome and say glad to have you here! http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/dance.gif

dear riceneuroni(i think i got that right): thanks so much for the reply. i am a rn and since i think most docs do not know their butt from a hole in the ground i will probably try the gluten free diet on my own and see how it goes. you're right; this is a great resource for med info of any kind. thanks again and have a great day, molissa

Mollisa, Please, please, please, make your doctor sit down and listen to you. I have an anxiety disorder and also suffer from depression. When I first went in to see my doctor about the pain I was having he just gave me another pill. I finally, very uncharacteristic of me, went off on him about how I am not crazy, and how this pain is very real. After many tests, I finally found out that I had pn. The doctor appoligized to me. Hopefully, he will be more patient with his patients. If that doc won't listen, change doctors. Good luck to you!
Bev.
