Hi Barb, I just opened the computer to ask if anyone knew about or had used the Spinal Cord Stimulator. What a coincidence to read your note. I was told about a year ago by my neurologist and pain management doctors to consider the S.C.Stimulator. I have had, for years peripheral neuropathy which causes me lots of pain in my feet. I take narcotic pain medication which I really don't like to do but it helps. I'll be anxious to hear of someone who has actually has the Spinal Cord Stimulator in place. I do not have diabetics. My neuropathy has come from Sjogren's
Syndrome. Vi

Thanks for the info....maybe between the two of us we will get some kind of an answer from someone who has used the stimulator. I am not too keen on having it done. I was told today that one of the top neurologists in NYC is getting the Anondyne System in and I am going to try that one first. I know that had most success from neuropathy caused by diabetes but if it helps me ( diabetic ) I will still let you know. Believe me...I will shout it from the roof tops. LOL
:) My doctors will not give me narcotics....wish they would for the really bad times..once got them from podiatrist when I really complained. But I really do hate to take them also. You just need more and more and the percacet sometimes just made me sick to my stomach. Take care

Hi I have a spinal cord stimulator.

I have reflex sympathetic dystrophy, which is a very painfull nerve disorder. I have rsd in my arm and both legs and feet.

The stimulator has been a god send. I have had many treatments for RSD and so many meds, nothing helped. The stimulator was my last hope.

I had the trial first and it was a sucess so I went ahead and got it permanently implanted.

I get excellent relief in my legs and feet. I can finally get some sleep. The stimulator puts a tingling sensation where the pain is.

If you want to know more I will be more then glad to answer your questions.

Thanks for answering. I have the type of Neuropathy that you get the tightness in the ankles and feet all the time. The pain that I get is almost like a labor pain that gets to a peak and then fades a bit. It can be in various parts of the feet and calves. Sometimes both feet at one time. It is worse at night and therefore sleep stinks...when you do get to sleep. Does the stimulator take away that tightness or is it only for the worst pains. Does it take away the pain enough to get off Neurontin? Thanks so much for any information you can give.
Regards, Barb

I just got off of neurotin, I don't need it anymore.

The stimulator works well for me but everyone is different so it is hard to say if it would help your situation. That is why having the trial is good, to see if you like the tingling feeling and to see if it works for you.

I know alot of people who it has giving there life back to. It dosn't take away all the pain but it sure is a heck of alot better.

I get terrible burning in my feet and awfull spasms in my legs. When I go to bed I just relax and turn it up and it puts me right to sleep.

It was a very hard decision for me to make to have the surgery but I knew I could not live with the terrible pain no more and now I am glad I did.

Take care

You need a much better pain doctor. RSD does spread and it sure sounds like RSD to me. I have had RSD for approx 7 years it went what I call remission but not a real remission just that the pain was more tolerable than it is now and has come back with a Vengence. I am on Neurtin 2400 mgs a day, nortriplyine(sp) 50-75 mg at night which allows me to sleep as long as the sensitivity is not bad, and also have received 12 Sympathetic Nerve Blocks with put the Sympathetic Nerve to sleep for a short time and when it wakes it feels better (hence lower pain) for a short time and hopefully will be better but mine isn't so another Pain Dr has just recommend me to get a SCS also and me like Barb have lots of questions and a VERY LARGE decision. Good Luck to all. Thanks and hopefully we will all some time in the the future have PainFreeDays. Patty

Hi,
I have been informed by my pain management doctor that SCS would be a significant improvement in my pain. I have one really important question though along with a load of others. My question is this. My husband and I have been trying to have a baby for three years now and in that time we have lost four babies. I have seen that some people (doctors) say that it would be ok to have a pregnancy with the SCS implanted. I'm not sure and I was wondering if any of you have had it and if this was a concern for any of you or if you know anything about it. We really want a child of our own. Although, I have been in severe chronic pain for a few months short of four years and the Doctors have said that it will last the rest of my life. I would really appreciate some feed back on this. Today is August 12, 2003 and I have an appointment with the Doctor on August 18, 2003 to discuss this more and determine if I want to go through with this or not. Please any suggestions or comments would be grateful. I am only 26. I had a severe car accident that left me with no nerves on my right side but they are trying to regenerate so I am having severe sciatic pain all along my right side from my hip down to my toes.
Thanks for any help!

Hi, Welcome to the board. I can't answer your question, but you might try posting your question down the board a bit further at Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy. There are a lot of folks there who might be able to help.

Hello, My name is Joann and tomorrow Sept. 22 I will be getting my spinal cord stimulator permently implanted. I am really nervious about this but I have not told my husband how nervious. He will be with me. I will let everyone know how it goes. My story is that back in 1968 I was in a bad car accident and things have just gotten worse, at this point my feet feel like they are swollan and I can't walk on then I have to walk on the sides of my feet, also I have had back surgery and now the pain has gotten very bad. I believe this implant will help. Good night for now. I will let you know how things turn out.

I am so glad to have found this thread....My husband is only 40 - had a Total Knee replacement last Sept and we thought that would finally solve all his problems...(Boy were we wrong!!)In Feb they found the knee was infected - had to take it out and put a temp joint w/antibiotic spacers in for 5 weeks and then 3/19/03 put another perm joint back in!! But now he is still in pain every day - still using crutches - it has been Hell!! He lost his job because of all this!! He has been on many narcotics - Oxycotin, Methodone, Percocet, Darvocet,etc....sleep pills, and now antideprecents (which I may want to start taking soon!!) His pain dr is now suggesting the Spinal Cord Stim (internal) - by Medtronics....We know nothing about this other than what the Dr has told us....I would love to hear from other that have had this - especially for Joint pain...Eventually if he can go back to work he would like to work in networking and computers (taking a class now) but we are concerned that he wont be able to be near computers because of the magnetic field from the stim??

Thanks in advance,
Jodi

Hi Jodi,

I am sorry to hera about your husband. I have a scs and it works great for my legs.

You can work and be around computers and household appliances. I can never lift anything over 20 pounds with this in. Other then that I am able to do pretty much.

If you have any questions I will be more then glad to try and answer them for you.

Cattys,

Thanks for your reply...I had also contacted Medtronics and they pretty much said the same thing...that being around computers should be fine...but I didnt know about not lifting more than 20lbs...?? If it could give him pain relief it would be worth it!!

How long have you had your Stim??

Jodi

Wondering how everyones Spinal Cord Stim is working for them?? How much pain relief do you actually get?? 50% or more??? My husband is worried about having one...they are going to do the temp one first and then the perm if it works!!! Does everyone have to limit thier lifting?? Anyone else have it for knee/joint pain??
You can email me too - Jodz10@aol.com
Thanks,
Jodi
